Chapter 8 - A Mother’s Legacy

Smoke billowed through the cabin as two heavily armored operatives poured through the shattered doorway, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room. Before the second operative could identify targets, David dropped from the ceiling rafters, bringing the butt of his pistol down hard against the man's helmet, sending him crashing to the floor unconscious. The first operative spun around, firing wildly, but David ducked behind the sturdy oak dining table, returning a precise two-shot burst that disabled the attacker's vest plates. Within seconds, the room fell silent save for the hiss of a smoke grenade rolling across the planks. David kicked the rifle away, ripping the communication headset off the fallen mercenary's head. Static hissed before a cold, familiar voice echoed through the earpiece: ""Miller. You always were stubborn. Did you really think you could hide your family from the board? Sarah chose this path when she tried to leak Project Janus. Bring the children and the flash drive to the lighthouse by midnight, or watch your wife pay for your defiance."" The transmission cut dead, leaving David staring at the smoking headset with a look of terrifying, unyielding resolve.
