Chapter 6 - Bloodline Fractures

The name printed in stark black typeface on the official legal header read: Clara Harrington-Vance.

Julian’s throat seized. The woman weeping at the bottom of the marble staircase was not a hired companion from a respectable agency, nor was she merely an opportunistic social climber. She was the estranged legal ward of Julian’s own late uncle—a branch of the family thought severed by bankruptcy and exile fifteen years prior.

""You look astonished,"" Victor remarked, savoring every second of Julian’s silence. ""Did you really believe Elena died in a random mechanical failure on the coastal highway? She found out about Clara's child before she died. She took that infant and had the hospital forge the maternal certificates to protect your precious reputation.""

""Leo is my son,"" Julian growled, his voice dropping into a guttural register that made the woman in gray take an involuntary half-step back toward the study desk. ""The genetic markers were verified by two separate labs.""

""Verified by labs funded through your foundation!"" Victor took a step closer, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. ""Under the law, an illegitimate adoption predicated on falsified death records is completely void. Clara has full legal claim over this child. And through him, she controls the entirety of the Vance maritime holdings.""

From the bottom of the grand stairs, the sound of slow, rhythmic clicking echoed upward. Nude high heels struck the marble treads. Clara was ascending, no longer slumping, no longer wiping away manufactured tears. Her posture was straight, shoulders back, her expression stripped of all remorse. In her hand, she held Julian’s private desk tablet, its screen unlocked and glowing with transfer approvals.

""I tried to make it painless, Julian,"" Clara said, pausing on the landing three steps below them. ""If you had just let him slip down the stairs, the medical review would have flagged your domestic negligence. A temporary custody transfer would have been processed quietly. You wouldn't have had to lose your reputation.""

Maya pressed herself against the wall, her eyes wide with terror as she looked between Clara and Victor. ""Dad... she has the security override codes.""

Julian looked down at his daughter, then back at Clara. The storm finally broke outside, lightning illuminating the foyer in blinding flashes of blue-white light.

""You think this house has only one security circuit, Clara?"" Julian said softly, his thumb tracing the metal frame of the smartphone still hidden in his palm. ""You opened the vault. Which means the automated lockdown protocol just engaged.""
