Chapter 5 - The Hidden Clause

The hall plunged into a suffocating silence, broken only by the distant rumbling of thunder beyond the panoramic windows. Julian felt the blood pound behind his temples, but he refused to grant his half-brother the satisfaction of a visible tremor.
""Elena’s remains were sealed under a perpetual probate trust,"" Julian countered, his voice cold as river ice. ""No state judge can sign an exhumation warrant without my signature as surviving executor. You fabricated the petition.""
""Fabricated?"" Victor sneered, stepping out of the study and onto the mezzanine runner. ""Perhaps you should check the fine print of your corporate merger from five years ago, Julian. The moment you accepted foreign investment capital from the Harrington Group, you pledged thirty percent of the family estate as collateral. And who sits on the Harrington board now? Clara’s father.""
Julian’s gaze hardened. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying alignment. The clumsy nanny-turned-fiancée, the staged accidents, the subtle isolation from his legal team over the last quarter—it had never been about domestic comfort. It was a calculated corporate siege designed to strip him of his familial custody, which in turn triggered a trust transfer worth millions.
""Julian,"" Maya whispered, her grip tightening on the back of his slacks. ""Look at the lady's bag.""
The woman in the gray suit had not moved. Her hands remained resting on the latch of the leather briefcase, but Julian noticed something Victor had overlooked: a tiny wire threaded through the lining of her jacket lapel, disappearing into a high-gain transmitter nestled near her collarbone. She was broadcasting every word of this exchange in real time.
""You brought an unauthorized recording device into a private residence, Victor,"" Julian stated, intentionally shifting his weight so his shadow masked the children. ""Which means whatever document you are holding was obtained through deliberate corporate espionage.""

""It doesn't matter how the truth surfaces,"" Victor said, waving the paper dismissively. ""Elena kept secrets from you, brother. Secrets about who Leo’s biological mother actually was. You think Clara is just an ambitious socialite who stumbled into your orbit?"" Victor chuckled, a harsh, grating sound. ""Clara isn't the outsider you think she is. Check the birth registry stamped on that judicial seal.""
Julian’s eyes dropped to the exposed legal header in Victor’s hand, and his heart turned to stone as he read the maiden name listed beside the biological claimant.
