Chapter 9 - The Fall of Harrington

The skylight overhead collapsed under the sudden impact of a heavy, pressurized steel cable, raining reinforced safety glass across the study rug. Arthur Harrington flinched, the revolver’s aim wavering upward for a fraction of a second as shards pelted his wool coat.

Julian did not hesitate. Dropping low to protect Maya and Leo, he lunged forward, driving his shoulder into Arthur’s midsection with brutal, athletic force. The impact slammed the older man against the edge of the mahogany desk, knocking the breath from his lungs and sending the pearl-handled revolver spinning across the floorboards.

A second later, two heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear descended through the shattered frame of the skylight, their carbines raised and laser optics painting the walls in crimson crosshairs.

""Federal Marshal service! Stay where you are! Hands on your head!"" the lead operative barked, kicking the fallen firearm away from Arthur’s reaching fingers.

Arthur lay crumpled against the floorboards, groaning as zip-ties were ruthlessly secured around his wrists. Julian rose slowly, breathing heavily, checking Leo first. The infant was trembling, eyes wide with sensory overload, but physically unharmed. Maya clung to Julian’s waist, burying her face into his shirt.

""Mr. Vance,"" the tactical commander said, lowering his weapon slightly. ""The perimeter is secure outside. We intercepted Victor Vance trying to breach the service garage. He’s already in custody.""

Julian nodded, exhaling a long, ragged breath that carried weeks of suppressed tension. ""And the woman on the stairs?""

""Our ground unit has her secured in the foyer,"" the agent confirmed. ""Paramedics are on site assessing her knee injury before transport.""

Julian walked out of the ruined study, stepping over the debris and glass, his daughter beside him and his son in his arms. As he reached the top of the marble staircase, the emergency shutters began their slow, motorized ascent, allowing the cool, rain-washed afternoon light to pour back into the grand hallway.

Below, Clara sat handcuffed against the bottom riser, an officer standing over her. When she looked up and saw Julian standing unbroken at the summit of the stairs, her expression shifted from defiance to utter, hollow ruin.

""Julian..."" she began, her voice cracked and pleading. ""They forced me. You have to believe me—""

Julian didn't answer. He turned to the lead agent beside him. ""Take them all out through the service entrance. Don't let their boots touch my front steps again.""
