Chapter 3 - The Second Betrayal

The air in the foyer thinned until breathing felt like inhaling powdered glass. Clara took a half-step sideways, her back scraping against the white wainscoting. Her previous defense—the act of the injured, misunderstood partner—dissolved entirely, replaced by a raw, animal terror that stripped the elegance from her poise.

""He... he said he only needed the signatures,"" she stammered, her voice dropping an octave into an unpolished, frantic rasp. ""He said you were cutting him out of the logistics merger! He swore if I kept you distracted for five minutes, he’d take the original deed copies and leave without hurting anyone!""

""Distracted?"" Julian stepped forward. The sheer physical presence of the man made the spacious foyer feel claustrophobic. Leo whimpered softly, sensing the kinetic energy vibrating through his father’s chest, and Julian instinctively patted the baby's back, never breaking eye contact with the woman who had shared his bed for half a year. ""You used my son's life as a distraction?""

""I didn't think he would roll down the stairs!"" she shrieked, losing control of her modulation. ""I thought he would just cry! I thought you’d run in from the kitchen, and Victor would have time to clear the back terrace! Julian, please—Victor has leverage on my family. He told me if I didn't open the eastern side gate, he’d bankrupt my father’s firm!""

Maya tugged Julian’s sleeve, her small face pale. ""Dad, the lock on your study. When I was upstairs getting my coloring book, the red light on the keypad was blinking green. The door was open.""

Julian felt a bitter, acidic realization settle in his stomach. Victor had not come merely for corporate contracts or real estate deeds. Victor Vance, Julian’s estranged half-brother and disgraced former COO, had spent five years hunting for a single asset: the sealed custody testament left behind by Julian’s late wife, Elena. A document that contained the forensic proof of Elena's staged accident—and the biological ledger proving Leo’s true parentage.

Julian moved past Clara without grazing her silk fabric, heading toward the curved staircase. ""Maya, stay on the ground floor. Lock the front double doors.""

""Julian, please don't go up there!"" Clara pleaded, lunging forward to clutch his forearm. ""He isn't alone. He brought someone with him.""

Before Julian could shake her off, the sharp, hollow echo of a deadbolt clicking open drifted down from the master bedroom landing above them.
