Chapter 2 - The Silent Angle

The high-definition screen rendered the high-ceilinged foyer in agonizingly sharp detail. Julian held the display flat between them, angling the glass so the afternoon glare bouncing off the crystal chandelier would not obscure the feed. On the recorded timeline, Clara ascended the grand stairs, her silhouette trim in the cream dress. Leo crawled behind her, cheerful and clumsy, his tiny hands gripping the riser beneath her feet.

Maya stood beside her father, her fingers knotted into the fabric of his dark button-up shirt. She didn't flinch. She watched the screen with the somber maturity of a child who had seen too much too soon. On the monitor, Clara paused. Her head did not turn in surprise. There was no stumble, no catching of high heels on the silk-wool runner. Instead, her posture hardened. She looked down over her shoulder, lifted her right foot with surgical precision, and drove the blunt heel of her pump into the infant’s fingers.

""No..."" Clara whimpered, her hands flying to her mouth, tears finally spilling over her mascara. ""No, Julian, that's taken out of context! The angle is distorted—the wide lens warps depth perception!""

""Be quiet,"" Julian ordered. His voice did not rise, but the floor seemed to vibrate beneath the gravity of his tone. ""Watch.""

On the footage, Leo screamed soundlessly on the digital playback, his grip failing as he tumbled backward across two steps before Julian surged into the frame to catch him. But Julian’s eyes were no longer locked on the fall. His attention was pinned to the upper-right corner of the video.

Standing on the second-floor mezzanine, partially hidden behind the marble bust of Marcus Aurelius, was a man. He wore an unbuttoned dark linen overshirt, holding a slim folder tucked beneath his arm, watching the cruelty unfold without offering a hand, a warning, or a breath of protest. As Julian rushed down below to save his son, the shadowy figure quietly turned and slipped through the door leading directly to Julian's private study.

Julian stared at the stranger's profile frozen on the screen, a suffocating familiarity tightening his chest.

""Who let Victor inside my house, Clara?"" Julian whispered, his gaze shifting up from the device to bore into her trembling face. ""And why was he walking out of my vault?""
