Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Study

The amber emergency lighting cast long, skeletal shadows across the mahogany shelves of Julian’s private study. Inside the room, the heavy steel safe stood wide open, its circular locking bolts extended. But Victor had not been alone when he breached the room.
Stepping out from behind the velvet draperies was a figure Julian had not seen in nearly seven years: Arthur Harrington, Clara’s father, holding an antique pearl-handled revolver lowered at his side.
""You always were too smart for your own good, Julian,"" Arthur said, his voice raspy with age and heavy tobacco use. He was an imposing man in his late sixties, dressed in an immaculate wool overcoat despite the indoor setting, his silver hair swept back from a face lined with deep, predatory creases.
""Arthur,"" Julian said evenly, stepping in front of Maya to shield both her and Leo entirely. ""I should have known Victor lacked the spine to orchestrate this alone.""
""Victor is an impatient fool,"" Arthur conceded, his pale eyes tracking the baby in Julian's arms without an ounce of warmth. ""He thinks in terms of short-term revenge and petty settlements. I think in terms of dynasties. The Vance maritime shipping lanes were built on Harrington credit fifty years ago. My grandfather gave your grandfather the money that built this empire. It is time that debt was settled in blood.""
""By framing me for negligence and stealing an infant?"" Julian scoffed, taking a calculated half-step toward the corner of the heavy oak desk where the emergency panic trigger was recessed beneath the molding. ""The state will never hand an infant to an aging felon and an unstable daughter.""
""They won't hand him to me,"" Arthur said calmly, raising the barrel of the revolver until it aligned directly with Julian's chest. ""They will hand him to the state probate guardian. And within forty-eight hours, an unfortunate medical complication will claim little Leo's life, leaving Clara as the sole surviving heir to Elena’s foundational trust.""
Maya let out a muffled sob against Julian's back.
""You would kill your own blood?"" Julian asked, his voice dead, flat, hollowed of all human warmth.

Arthur smiled thinly, the skin around his eyes tightening. ""Clara was never my daughter, Julian. She was merely an orphan my brother left behind, raised to do exactly what she was told. And right now, her job is finished.""
Arthur cocked the hammer of the revolver. Before his finger could squeeze the trigger, the room was shattered by an explosion of shattering wood and glass from the ceiling above.
