Chapter 1 - The Broken Frame

The stinging burn across Elena’s cheekbone was nothing compared to the icy numbness spreading through her chest. On the polished oak floorboards, the crayon drawing lay crumpled beneath Julian’s polished leather shoe—a smear of bright yellow wax where the sunny sky had been. Her champagne silk pajamas felt whisper-thin, offering zero protection against the sudden autumn chill pouring into the master bedroom.
Across the room, seven-year-old Lily was hyperventilating, her delicate frame curled into a tight ball against Julian’s tailored suit jacket. Julian held the little girl against him like a human shield, his broad shoulders squared and his knuckles white. The dark stubble along his jawline twitched with barely suppressed fury. To anyone walking in right now, the tableau was devastatingly clear: a loving, protective father rescuing his traumatized daughter from a hysterical, disheveled mother collapsed on the floor.
""Julian, please,"" Elena rasped, her voice catching in her dry throat as she tried to push herself up. Her palms slipped against the slick wood. ""You were holding the pillow over her face. I saw you. My God, I saw you.""
Julian didn't blink. His expression remained carved from slate, calculating and eerily composed. ""Look at yourself, Elena. You've completely lost your grip on reality. You’re having another psychotic episode."" He looked down at Lily, his hand stroking her golden hair with practiced gentleness. ""Shh, sweetheart. Daddy’s here. The doctor will be here soon to give Mommy her medicine.""
Lily buried her face into Julian’s lapel, muffled sobs shaking her shoulders. She didn't speak. She didn't look at Elena. That terrified silence cut deeper than any physical blow. Why wasn't Lily defending her? Why wasn't she telling him to let her go?
Elena’s gaze flicked toward the nightstand, where the master bedroom panic button sat beneath the discreet mahogany panel. If she could just reach it, the private estate security would respond within ninety seconds. But Julian was already moving, his heavy footsteps deliberate as he backed toward the open bedroom door, shielding Lily completely with his body.

""Stay right there, Elena,"" Julian commanded, his baritone dropping to a venomous whisper that barely reached her ears. ""If you take one step toward this door, I will tell the board and the court that you attacked our daughter in broad daylight. Who do you think they will believe? The CEO of Vance Biologics, or the wife whose psychiatric records I just updated?""
Before Elena could scream, Julian pulled the heavy oak door shut. The click of the electronic deadbolt echoed through the empty room like a gunshot. Elena scrambled to her feet and threw her weight against the wood, pounding with bruised fists until her knuckles bled. Through the soundproof paneling, she heard the faint chime of Julian’s phone keypad dialing outside, followed by his smooth, mournful voice delivering a rehearsed lie to the emergency operator.
