Chapter 11 - The Pine Barrens Vault

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time David’s battered station wagon cut its headlights half a mile from the perimeter fence of the Vance Research Center. The compound was hidden deep within sixty acres of dense, swampy pine forest, surrounded by razor wire and motion sensors.
Elena pulled the heavy black tactical sweater over her hospital scrubs, ignoring the sharp bites of pain along her ribs. David handed her a handheld frequency jammer.
""The perimeter is automated,"" David explained, unfolding an architectural schematic across the steering wheel under the faint red light of the dashboard. ""Julian replaced the human night guards with sensory drones six months ago. If this jammer holds, we have a four-minute blind spot in Sector 4’s drainage culvert. Once inside, we are on our own.""
""Where will he take her?"" Elena asked, staring through the rain-streaked windshield at the monolithic concrete structure rising above the pines.
""Sub-level 3. The neuro-mapping lab,"" David said, his voice grim. ""It’s a Faraday chamber. No outside signals can penetrate it. Once the surgical helmet is locked in place, the electromagnetic pulse clears short-term synaptic memory in three stages. If he finishes Stage 2, Lily won't recognize your face. If he finishes Stage 3... she won't even know her own name.""
Elena gripped the heavy tire iron she had kept hidden in David’s bag. ""He won't finish Stage 1.""
They moved through the wet underbrush like shadows. The cold mud seeped into Elena’s boots, grounding her, sharpening her senses. The fear that had paralyzed her in the bedroom that morning had burned away, leaving behind a cold, lethal clarity.
David hit the switch on the jammer. The perimeter lights flickered, a red warning strobe spinning silently atop the fence post as the automated sensors went blind. David pulled open the rusted iron grating of the drainage culvert with a crowbar, and Elena slid feet-first into the dark concrete pipe.
The smell of ozone and industrial coolant grew stronger as they crawled deeper beneath the facility. They emerged into a subterranean mechanical corridor lined with thick fiber-optic cables and coolant lines humming with thousands of volts of electricity.
Elena moved toward the heavy steel blast door marked LABORATORY 3B: COGNITIVE INTERVENTION.

Through the reinforced observation window, she saw him.
Julian was dressed in a sterile surgical smock, standing over an operating table bathed in harsh ultraviolet light. Lily was strapped to the gurney, a complex metallic crown fitted tightly around her small skull, its needles glowing with pulsing blue fiber optics. Julian was adjusting a dial on a control console, his face illuminated by the blue luminescence of a digital monitor showing Lily’s brainwave activity dropping into a flat, synthetic rhythm.
