Chapter 13 - Blood in the Dark

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the ragged, wheezing gasps of David choking on the floor and the heavy, dripping rain echoing through the intake vents above.
Elena dragged herself up from the floor, her vision swimming with white afterimages from the electrical blast. Her fingers were scorched, but she didn't care. She reached into the dim red light of the emergency lamps and ripped the dead metallic helmet off Lily’s head.
Lily let out a sharp, gasping breath, coughing violently as her eyelids fluttered open. Her hazel eyes—bright, terrified, but completely aware—locked onto Elena.
""Mommy...?""
The relief hit Elena so hard it felt like physical trauma. Lily knew her. The slate was intact.
""I’m here, baby. I’m right here,"" Elena wept, tearing open the velcro wrist restraints and pulling Lily into her arms.
Behind her, a wet, guttural gasp made her freeze.
Elena turned. In the crimson shadows, Julian was standing over David’s limp body. Julian’s suit was torn, his arm hanging limp at an unnatural angle, blood running down the bridge of his nose. In his left hand, he held a long, tapered surgical scalpel, its blade catching the red emergency strobe like a drop of liquid blood.
""You have destroyed twenty years of research,"" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, calm madness. ""Billions of dollars. My legacy. Everything I built.""
""You built an empire on human misery, Julian,"" Elena said, stepping back toward the exit while shielding Lily completely behind her back. ""You're a monster. It’s over. The police know. The feds know.""
Julian laughed—a dry, rattling sound that raised the hair on Elena’s arms. ""The feds? The feds are the ones funding the contract, Elena. Who do you think bought the first run of the suppression units? You think some small-town sheriff is going to protect you from the people who run this country?""

He took a step forward, raising the scalpel. ""If I can't deliver the prototype intact... I will deliver the autopsy.""
Elena backed away, but her heel hit the base of the shattered terminal. There was nowhere left to run.
