Chapter 10 - The Whistleblower's Ghost

Left alone in the locked hospital room, Elena had less than twenty minutes before the local sheriff’s department would be forced to process the arrest warrant Sterling had pushed through the municipal court. She had no money, no phone, no allies in the local government, and her daughter was being transported to the Vance Biologics research facility in the Pine Barrens—a fortress masquerading as a modern research park.
Then she remembered the nurse who had changed her dressings an hour earlier.
The woman had slipped a tiny piece of folded carbon paper beneath Elena’s water pitcher, whispering a single phrase before leaving: ""David is waiting in the basement laundry.""
David Vance. Julian’s estranged younger brother. The brilliant neurochemist who had mysteriously vanished from the company’s executive board three years ago after publicly accusing Julian of unethical human testing protocols. Everyone assumed David had died in an offshore sailing accident.
Elena didn't hesitate. She ripped the IV needle from the back of her own hand, kicked off her hospital slippers, and used the heavy steel IV stand to jam the doorknob from the inside, delaying the guards outside. She climbed through the service crawlspace behind the bathroom linen chute—a narrow, dust-choked tunnel meant for maintenance piping.
Coughing quietly, her ribs throbbing with every inch she dragged herself forward, Elena navigated the darkness of the hospital’s vertical utility shaft until she dropped into the damp, roaring expanse of the basement commercial laundry.
Steam hissed from industrial presses. Standing between rows of hanging white sheets was a man in a greasemonkey uniform, his hair streaked with premature grey, his face bearing the unmistakable, sharp jawline of the Vance family.
""You look like hell, Elena,"" David whispered, stepping out of the steam.
""He has Lily, David,"" she choked out, catching herself against a laundry cart. ""He’s going to erase her. He’s running the Tier 3 protocol on her.""
David’s face hardened, his jaw clenching so tight the muscle leaped under the skin. ""I know. The protocol wasn't designed for adults, Elena. It was engineered from the beginning for children—because their neural pathways are plastic enough to survive total identity reconstruction without vegetative collapse. He’s not trying to silence her. He’s turning her into the prototype for a billion-dollar military contract.""

He grabbed a dark duffel bag from under a table and unzipped it, revealing a set of dark mechanics' coveralls, a burner phone, and an electronic bypass decoder.
""The Pine Barrens facility has an unmapped subterranean intake vent,"" David said, his eyes blazing with cold vengeance. ""We have ninety minutes before the procedure begins. Are you ready to burn my brother's empire to the ground?""
