Chapter 2 - The Soundproof Cage

The air in the master suite grew heavy and suffocating. Elena paced the perimeter of the room, her breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts as adrenaline surged through her veins. Every window on the third floor of the Vance estate was reinforced with laminated ballistic glass—a security measure Julian had insisted upon three years ago, claiming it was to protect their family from industrial espionage. Now, those impenetrable panes felt like the walls of a solitary confinement cell.
She rushed to the en-suite bathroom, tearing open the medicine cabinet with trembling hands. There, lined up in neat, clinical rows, were amber bottles bearing her name. Clonazepam. Quetiapine. Haloperidol. Her stomach churned. For six months, Julian had been personally handing her nightly supplements in tiny silver cups, murmuring sweet reassurances about her lingering postpartum depression and stress. She had trusted him blindly. But she hadn't taken the pills for the past four days, intentionally spitting them out after noticing memory lapses and inexplicable muscle weakness.
That was why she had woken up early today. That was why she had caught him standing over Lily’s bed with the pillow.
Elena turned on the golden faucet, splashing cold water against her swollen cheek. The mirror reflected a stranger: hollowed hazel eyes, dark circles bruised with exhaustion, and a streak of purple blossoming across her cheekbone. She looked precisely like the unhinged woman Julian was describing to the authorities outside.
Suddenly, the hum of the central ventilation system clicked off. In the silence that followed, a low electronic beep sounded from the bedroom dresser. Elena crept out of the bathroom, her heart hammering in her ears.
The sound was coming from Julian’s personal work tablet, forgotten on the corner of the marble vanity in his haste to secure Lily. The screen glowed softly with an incoming alert from an encrypted cloud server.
Elena lunged forward, her fingers trembling as she tapped the glass. Julian’s passcode was always a variation of Lily’s birthday, but it rejected her first attempt. She tried Lily’s birth time: 0-6-1-4. The lock screen dissolved into an active dashboard.

It wasn't medical records or board meeting agendas. Open before her was a streaming live telemetry feed titled Subject 04: Lily Vance. It displayed real-time biometrics: elevated heart rate, fluctuating blood pressure, and a biochemical marker labeled Neuro-Suppressant Tier 3.
Elena’s lungs seized. Julian hadn't just been drugging her—he had been systematically medicating their daughter to keep her docile and terrified. And right at the bottom of the screen, a new notification flashed in urgent crimson: Extraction protocol initiated. Transport arriving at South Helipad in 12 minutes.
