Chapter 12 - Severing the Neural Thread

""Stand back,"" David whispered, sliding the electronic bypass decoder into the laboratory door's card reader. The device flickered, lines of green hexadecimal code cascading across its small LED screen as it brute-forced the cryptographic lock.

Julian didn't notice the faint mechanical click at the door. He was entirely absorbed in his monitors, his voice murmuring into an audio recorder dictating the clinical notes of his own daughter’s destruction: ""Subject 04 demonstrating expected resistance to Tier 3 induction. Commencing secondary pulse in five seconds. Synaptic decay projected at ninety-eight percent.""

The heavy steel door slid open with a sharp pneumatic hiss.

Julian spun around, his eyes widening in pure shock as Elena stepped through the threshold.

""Elena? That’s impossible—""

She didn't give him time to finish the thought. Elena lunged across the sterile tile, swinging the steel tire iron with both hands. Julian threw his arm up in self-defense; the metal cracked against his forearm with a sickening crunch, sending him stumbling back against the instrument cart. Trays of surgical steel tools crashed to the floor in a cacophony of clattering metal.

""David! Shut it down!"" Elena screamed, diving toward the operating table.

David leaped toward the main control console, his hands flying across the keyboard to abort the sequence, but Julian had engaged a hardware lock. A mechanical voice echoed through the room: Secondary pulse initiated. T-minus twenty seconds.

Julian recovered with predatory speed. Despite his fractured arm, he lunged at David from behind, wrapping a heavy power cable around his younger brother’s neck, dragging him away from the terminal. David choked, clawing at the thick rubber cord as Julian tightened the garrote with maniacal strength.

""You should have stayed dead, little brother!"" Julian hissed, his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl.

Elena ignored the struggle behind her. Her entire world was reduced to the trembling child on the table. Lily’s eyes were rolling back in her head, her tiny hands clutching the arm restraints as the metallic crown hummed with an ominous, rising pitch.

""Lily! Look at me!"" Elena cried, her fingers tearing frantically at the release latches of the headpiece. The locks were magnetically sealed, burning hot to the touch.

T-minus ten seconds.

Elena saw the heavy emergency power conduit feeding directly into the base of the machine. Without a second thought, she grabbed the tire iron, wedged it between the main busbar and the wall ground, and drove her entire body weight downward.

A blinding flash of electric blue erupted from the terminal. The arc of current blew Elena backward across the floor, the smell of scorched wire filling the air as the entire room plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the dying crimson pulse of the emergency backup lighting.

The hum died. The crown went cold.
