Chapter 8 - The Media Storm

The sterile smell of antiseptic and bleach did little to calm Elena’s frayed nerves. She sat on the edge of the hospital bed in the private pediatric wing of St. Jude's, her right wrist wrapped in tight fiberglass and three cracked ribs bound tightly beneath a clean hospital gown. Across the room, Lily slept peacefully, hooked to an IV drip flushing the remnants of Julian’s neuro-suppressant cocktail from her system.

The television mounted in the corner of the room was muted, but the chyron crawling across the bottom of the screen was screaming in bold red letters:

BREAKING: HEIRESS ELENA VANCE ARRESTED AFTER ATTACKING HUSBAND AND ATTEMPTING TO ABDUCT DAUGHTER.

Elena gripped the edge of the mattress until her knuckles turned translucent. The news footage cut to a press conference held on the steps of Vance Biologics headquarters. Standing at the podium was not Julian, but Arthur Sterling—the firm’s lead defense attorney and a former federal prosecutor known for annihilating whistleblowers.

Beside Sterling was a certified medical document displayed on a large screen. With terrifying precision, Sterling was systematically dismantling Elena’s entire life. He produced psychiatric evaluations dating back five years, heavily forged to depict Elena as suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia with violent tendencies. He presented security footage—carefully edited—showing Elena smashing the greenhouse windows, stealing a maintenance vehicle, and intentionally ramming an aircraft containing her own child.

Julian was being framed as the heroic, bleeding father who had barely survived his mentally unraveling wife’s rampage.

""Mrs. Vance has a history of unprovoked violent outbursts,"" Sterling’s mouth moved silently on the screen, his polished demeanor radiating sorrowful concern. ""Our primary concern remains the safety of young Lily. We have filed an emergency protective injunction to transfer Lily into the custody of state-appointed corporate guardians pending Mrs. Vance’s immediate institutionalization.""

A heavy knock rattled the hospital door. It didn't wait for permission.

Two men in dark grey suits entered, flanked by a woman carrying a leather briefcase with a state seal embossed on the flap. Outside in the hallway, the sheriff’s deputy who had been posted to guard Elena’s room was nowhere to be seen, replaced by two private guards wearing Vance security badges.

""Mrs. Vance,"" the woman said, pulling a signed document from her briefcase without meeting Elena’s eyes. ""I am Agent Miller from the Department of Child Protection. By order of the county superior court, temporary physical custody of Lily Vance has been revoked from both parents and remanded to Vance Corporate Trust. Step away from the bed.""
