Chapter 12 - The Reckoning on the Tarmac

The rain lashed mercilessly against their faces. The deafening roar of the aircraft propeller whipped Evelyn's blonde hair wildly across her eyes. She was drenched, her makeup ruined, holding baby Leo precariously close to the churning steel blades.

""Evelyn, look at me!"" Claire shouted over the engine noise, stopping ten feet away and raising her hands. ""Look at what you're doing!""

""You took everything!"" Evelyn screamed, sobbing hysterically. ""I was supposed to be Julian's wife! I was supposed to be the lady of Vance Tower! You had your chance, and you threw him away!""

""Julian used you, Evelyn!"" Claire yelled back, stepping forward an inch at a time, keeping her voice steady despite the agony in her chest. ""He never loved you. He didn't love me, and he certainly doesn't love that child! Look around you—where is Julian? He's in the trunk of a mafia car paying for his own greed! He abandoned you to take the fall!""

Evelyn looked down at the tiny bundle in her arms. Baby Leo began to wail, his cries cutting through the storm. Evelyn’s hands began to shake violently.

""I can't go to prison, Claire..."" Evelyn sobbed, her knees buckling under the weight of her panic. ""I don't have anywhere to go...""

""Give me my son, Evelyn,"" Claire said, her voice softening with calculated authority. ""Hand him to me, and I will let the plane take you. No police at this runway. No sirens. Just leave and never show your face in this country again.""

""You're lying! You'll have Thomas shoot me!""

""If I wanted Thomas to shoot you, you would already be dead,"" Claire replied, gesturing toward the shadows where Thomas Drake had his laser sight trained directly on Evelyn's shoulder. ""I don't care about revenge, Evelyn. I only care about my baby. Give him to me.""

For five agonizing seconds, only the roar of the engines filled the air. Evelyn stared at Claire, seeing the quiet, terrifying power of a mother who had conquered boardrooms, outmaneuvered criminals, and hunted her down across an entire state.

Slowly, Evelyn dropped her head and wept. She took three stumbling steps forward and extended her trembling arms.

Claire lunged forward, snatching Leo into her embrace and pulling him tightly against her chest, shielding him from the freezing rain with her own body. Leo’s cries instantly quieted as he felt his mother’s familiar warmth.

Behind them, Thomas Drake emerged from the dark, pointing his weapon toward the idling plane. ""Get on the plane, Evelyn. Now.""

Evelyn turned and ran blindly toward the aircraft stairs. She scrambled inside, and the pilot immediately throttled the engines, taxiing down the runway before lifting off into the stormy night sky.

Claire collapsed onto the wet tarmac, holding her son, kissing his wet forehead over and over. ""I've got you... Mommy's got you...""

Thomas knelt beside her, draping his dry jacket over both of them. ""It’s over, Claire. Let's go home.""

Claire looked up toward the clouds where the plane had vanished, then back toward the skyline of the city glowing on the horizon.

""Not yet, Thomas,"" Claire whispered. ""There is still one loose end.""
