Chapter 2 - The Midnight Vault

The penthouse of the Vance Tower was quiet, cloaked in cold shadows and polished marble. Julian hurled his glass against the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, sending scotch and shards spraying across the pristine rugs. Marcus Vance, his chief legal counsel and second cousin, sat motionless on the leather sofa, a thick leather-bound binder resting on his lap.

""Tell me she’s lying,"" Julian hissed, pacing back and forth. ""Tell me my grandfather didn't write something that ridiculous.""

Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression solemn. ""Arthur Vance was eccentric, Julian, but he wasn't reckless. He knew your father ran through his inheritance with fast cars and bad investments. He suspected you would follow the same pattern. The clause is airtight. If you don't hold forty percent by midnight tonight, the voting rights transfer to your children under Claire’s sole guardianship.""

Evelyn was curled up in an armchair, scrolling furiously through social media. ""We can dispute paternity! You haven't touched her in eight months! How could they be yours?""

Julian stopped dead. He stared at Marcus. ""Can we? A court-ordered DNA test. That takes months. It freezes the shares.""

""Claire anticipated that,"" Marcus said, opening the binder to reveal signed medical records. ""The in vitro fertilization using your frozen samples from three years ago. You signed the consent forms before you underwent chemotherapy, Julian. You never revoked them.""

Julian felt the room tilt. Three years ago, when he was terrified of dying, Claire had stood by his bedside every night. She had organized the clinic, preserved the lineage, and believed in their future. He had forgotten all about those documents the moment his cancer went into remission and he discovered the intoxicating thrills of wealth, boardrooms, and younger women.

""She used my own clinic against me,"" Julian whispered, clutching his temples.

""She used your neglect against you,"" Marcus corrected sharply. ""Unless you can prove fraud before the board meeting tomorrow morning, Claire represents fifty-two percent of the company.""

Julian’s eyes narrowed into cold slits. He walked over to the mahogany desk and pulled out a small black burner phone. He dialed a contact saved simply as Vance Ops.

""Find where she took them,"" Julian commanded the receiver. ""And secure whatever paperwork she’s hiding before morning.""

Across town, inside a discreet safehouse overlooking the harbor, Claire was heating milk in a dim kitchen. Suddenly, the security alarms shrieked, and the power plummeted into pitch blackness.
