Chapter 7 - Evelyn's Bargain

Julian was sitting in a dingy hotel lounge on the industrial outskirts of town, draining his third tumbler of cheap bourbon. Evelyn sat opposite him, clutching an imitation designer purse, her makeup smeared with dried tears.
""My card was declined at the salon, Julian,"" Evelyn whimpered, slamming her gold card onto the sticky wooden table. ""The concierge at the penthouse told me my bags were waiting on the sidewalk. You promised me an island! You promised me I would never have to work a day in my life!""
""Shut up, Evelyn!"" Julian snapped, his eyes bloodshot. ""Do you think I care about your nail appointments right now? Claire took everything. Every account, every trust, every credential! I have twenty thousand dollars left in an overseas account, and that's barely enough to keep the lawyers on retainer!""
""Then give me half and let me leave!"" she demanded.
Julian sneered, reaching across the table to grip her wrist tightly. ""You don't leave until I say so. You were seen with me everywhere. The Valenti family knows who you are. If they can't find me, who do you think they're going to visit?""
Evelyn gasped, pulling her arm away. She looked at Julian, suddenly realizing that the charming, wealthy heir she had seduced was nothing more than a cornered rat ready to throw anyone into the trap to save his own skin.
""I need to use the restroom,"" Evelyn whispered, standing up shakily.
She walked briskly past the restrooms and pushed open the heavy emergency exit door into the alleyway. Pulling her phone from her purse, she searched her contacts for a number she had saved months ago as leverage.
She dialed Claire Vance.
The call connected on the second ring. ""Speak,"" Claire answered, her voice cold and commanding.
""Claire... it's Evelyn,"" she stammered, shivering in the brisk evening wind.
""If this is about your wardrobe at the penthouse, it’s already in storage,"" Claire said dismissively. ""I have no business with you.""
""Wait! Don't hang up!"" Evelyn pleaded, glancing anxiously around the dim alley. ""Julian is meeting someone tonight. Marcus. Marcus Vance brought him a set of encrypted files from the company vaults. Julian is planning to sell the logistics codes to Valenti tonight in exchange for safe passage to South America!""
Claire paused on the other end of the line. ""Why are you telling me this?""
""Because he's going to leave me behind to take the blame for the fraud,"" Evelyn sobbed. ""And because Valenti will kill me if Julian disappears. I’ll give you the location of their meet, Claire. But I want a ticket out of the country and five hundred thousand dollars.""
Claire let out a cold, humorless laugh. ""You helped my husband destroy my marriage and steal from my children, Evelyn. You don't get half a million dollars.""
""Then he gets on that plane with the codes!"" Evelyn screamed in desperation.
""I will give you fifty thousand cash, a one-way coach ticket to Europe, and I won't submit your name to the federal indictment tomorrow morning,"" Claire said flatly. ""That is your only offer. Take it or spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary.""

Evelyn swallowed her pride, tears streaming down her cheeks. ""Warehouse four... at the old naval shipyard. Ten o'clock tonight.""
Claire hung up without saying another word.
