Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup

By 7:45 AM, the top floor of Vance Tower was buzzing with nervous anticipation. Board members, elderly financiers, and corporate stakeholders gathered around the forty-foot mahogany table, sipping lukewarm coffee and whispering among themselves.

Julian sat at the head of the table, looking haggard despite his designer suit. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his hair was uncharacteristically disheveled. Evelyn sat in a leather chair behind him against the wall, chewing her bottom lip until it bled.

""This meeting is a farce,"" Julian muttered to Marcus, who sat beside him reviewing papers. ""We have the voting bloc. Harrison and Sterling promised their allegiance. Claire doesn't have the stomach for a public fight.""

""You underestimate her, Julian,"" Marcus said without looking up. ""You always have.""

The double doors of the boardroom swung open precisely at 8:00 AM.

Claire walked in. She had swapped her hospital silk dress for a razor-sharp charcoal tailored suit, her blonde hair swept back into a sleek, professional bun. In her arms, she pushed the beige stroller, wheeling it straight to the foot of the conference table. Beside her walked Nathan Frost, the most formidable forensic accountant and corporate litigation attorney in the country.

A murmur rippled through the directors. Several older men stood up instinctively out of respect.

""Claire,"" Julian said, standing up and forcing a patronizing smile. ""This is a private corporate assembly. You can’t bring your personal matters—or nursery equipment—into this boardroom.""

""On the contrary, Julian,"" Claire said, signaling Frost, who opened his briefcase and distributed thick dossiers to every board member. ""These children represent fifty-two percent of voting equity under the 1998 Arthur Vance Trust. As their sole legal guardian, I am chairing this meeting.""

Julian slammed his palms on the wood. ""Those children were conceived without my explicit consent! The legal filings are fraudulent!""

Frost stood tall, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. ""We have the notarized fertility agreements signed by Julian Vance three years ago, backed by electronic metadata from the cryo-bank. We also have chain-of-custody DNA profiles verified by three independent state laboratories this morning. They are Julian Vance’s legitimate sons.""

Julian turned pale, looking frantically at Harrison and Sterling, his staunchest allies. ""Harrison, tell her! We control the proxy votes!""

Harrison looked down at the dossier in front of him, sweating profusely. He swallowed hard and looked up at Julian with an apologetic wince. ""Julian... the trust documents are unequivocal. The moment Arthur’s bloodline continues through a legitimate marriage, our proxy authority dissolves. We can't overrule the founding charter.""

Claire stepped forward, leaning her hands on the table. Her eyes bored into Julian's. ""There is one item on this morning's agenda: the immediate termination of Julian Vance as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately.""

""You can't do this to me!"" Julian screamed, losing all composure. ""I built this company!""

""My grandfather built this company,"" Claire corrected fiercely. ""You just leased its name to cover your debts.""

The secretary began the roll call. One by one, every board member voted: ""Aye.""

When the final tally was recorded, Claire turned to the two uniformed security guards standing by the doorway. ""Please escort Mr. Vance and his guest out of the building. Revoke their keycards and clear their offices.""

Evelyn burst into tears, grabbing Julian’s coat. ""Julian, do something! What about my apartment? What about the money?""

Julian pushed her away, his eyes wild with fury. He glared at Claire, leaning down until he was inches from her face. ""You think you've won? You think you can manage this empire alone?"" he snarled. ""Check the offshore ledgers, Claire. There’s a thirty-million-dollar loan due next Friday. If you can't pay it, the company collapses, and you drown with it.""

Claire didn't blink. ""Then get out of my office, Julian. Before I have you arrested for criminal fraud.""

Julian stormed out, followed by a sobbing Evelyn. The boardroom fell into dead silence. Claire stood tall, but beneath the table, her hands were trembling. She opened Julian's private ledger left on the table. What she saw made her stomach drop: the thirty-million-dollar debt wasn't owed to a bank. It was owed to the Syndicate.
