Chapter 13 - The Hidden Vault

The next morning, sunlight broke through the receding storm clouds, bathing Vance Tower in crisp golden light. Inside the penthouse, Claire sat in a rocking chair, holding both Lucas and Leo in her arms. Both babies were fed, warm, and sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the nightmare that had transpired hours before.
The double doors opened, and Nathan Frost walked into the nursery, accompanied by a locksmith carrying a heavy titanium drill case.
""We found it,"" Frost said quietly. ""Behind the false wall in Julian's private wine cellar. Arthur Vance's personal safe.""
Claire gently placed the twins into their cribs, kissing each on the cheek, before following Frost down the spiral staircase into the cool depths of the tower’s basement cellar.
In the farthest corner, behind racks of vintage Bordeaux, a heavy steel door was exposed where wood paneling had been pried away. The master locksmith worked on the electronic tumbler for ten minutes until a heavy mechanical clunk resonated through the concrete chamber.
The heavy door swung open on oiled hinges.
Inside was not piles of gold or stacks of offshore currency. There was only a single polished mahogany box resting on a velvet pedestal, accompanied by a dated leather journal.
Claire stepped forward and lifted the lid of the box. Inside lay a set of golden keys and a legal document sealed with red wax bearing the Arthur Vance family crest.
Frost picked up the document, his eyes widening as he read the opening declarations.
""Claire..."" Frost whispered, his voice trembling with genuine shock. ""You need to read this.""
Claire took the parchment. The ink was faded, written in her grandfather's distinctive, elegant calligraphy twenty years ago.
To whoever holds this key—be it my granddaughter or my wayward grandson:
If you are reading this, the Vance empire has reached its precipice. Julian was never my biological grandson. His father was adopted under a closed covenant after my true child passed away in infancy. The Vance bloodline does not run through Julian. It runs exclusively through you, Claire. You were never just my heir by marriage. You are my daughter’s daughter, hidden from the public eye to protect you from the corporate kidnappings that plagued our family in the nineties.
Claire leaned against the stone wall, the breath knocked out of her lungs. Her entire marriage, her entire identity, had been shaped by a grand design she had never understood. Julian had believed he was the rightful king, treating her like an ornament, completely ignorant of the fact that he was an imposter sitting on a throne built by her true ancestors.
""My God,"" Claire whispered, tears welling in her eyes. ""Julian never owned anything. Not even his name.""

Suddenly, Frost's phone rang on speaker. It was the desk sergeant at the central police precinct.
""Mr. Frost? We have an emergency down here. A man was just dumped outside our front steps from an unmarked van. He claims to be Julian Vance, and he’s demanding to see his wife.""
