Chapter 14 - The Broken King

The interrogation room at the central precinct smelled of industrial bleach and stale tobacco. Julian sat at the metal table, wrapped in an oversized prison blanket, his face bruised and swollen. His designer suit was torn to shreds, his manicured hands filthy and trembling.

When the heavy steel door opened, Julian looked up with desperate, bloodshot eyes.

Claire walked in alone. She wore a pristine ivory coat, carrying herself with an effortless elegance that made Julian shrink back into his plastic chair.

""Claire!"" Julian rasped, lunging across the table until the chain of his handcuffs jerked him backward. ""Thank God! You have to tell them! Tell them who I am! The Valentis took everything—my watch, my rings, my offshore accounts! They dumped me on the street like garbage!""

Claire sat down across from him, resting her hands folded on the table. She looked at him not with anger, not with hatred, but with a profound, chilling indifference.

""You are Julian,"" she said quietly. ""A private citizen facing forty-two counts of federal bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit extortion.""

Julian’s face twisted in horror. ""What are you talking about?! I'm your husband! We can fight this together! I know I made mistakes with Evelyn, but she’s gone! We can take the boys, sell the company, and start over in Europe!""

""The boys are safe,"" Claire said, her voice devoid of emotion. ""And you will never see them again.""

""They're my sons!"" Julian screamed, rattling the chains against the metal table. ""I have rights! Arthur’s trust gives me parental guardianship!""

Claire reached into her purse and pulled out a single photocopied document, sliding it across the metal surface until it rested in front of Julian's bruised face.

""Arthur’s trust protects the Vance bloodline,"" Claire stated clearly. ""You should read your grandfather's true testament, Julian. You are not a Vance. You never were. Your father was adopted, and Arthur knew you carried none of his legacy.""

Julian stared at the document. He read the words, his lips moving silently, his eyes darting frantically across the page as if trying to rearrange the alphabet to save himself. His jaw slackened, and a pathetic, choking sound escaped his throat.

""No..."" Julian whimpered, shaking his head in denial. ""No, this is impossible... I'm Arthur's grandson... I am the Vance heir!""

""You're an embezzler who married Arthur's true granddaughter,"" Claire said, standing up and smoothing her coat. ""The divorce papers have been filed. Your parental rights have been severed under moral turpitude clauses. When you walk into court on Monday, you will be represented by a state-appointed public defender.""

""Claire! Don't do this!"" Julian begged, bursting into tears, sliding off his chair onto his knees, dragging his handcuffed wrists along the floor toward her boots. ""Please! I have nothing left! I'll die in prison!""

Claire stepped back, her expression unyielding. ""You had a loyal wife, two beautiful sons, and the greatest empire in the city, Julian. You traded all of it for vanity.""

She turned and walked toward the door. As the guard buzzed the lock, Julian’s wails echoed behind her, bouncing off the concrete walls like the desperate cries of a ghost trapped in an empty tomb.

Claire stepped out into the fresh morning air, taking a deep, clean breath.
