Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Safehouse

The sudden darkness was instantly accompanied by the sound of shattered glass downstairs. Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands remained steady. She didn't drop the bottle. Instead, she slipped her shoes off, her silk dress rustling faintly as she moved across the hardwood floor toward the nursery.

The safehouse had belonged to her late father, an architect who understood the perils of wealth. It had reinforced steel core doors and hidden escape routes that Julian had never known existed.

Claire scooped both swaddled infants into a reinforced double baby sling, strapping them tightly against her chest. She grabbed her leather briefcase containing the original trust documents and birth records.

Through the corridor, heavy, calculated footsteps ascended the staircase. Two men, speaking in hushed murmurs.

""Search the bedrooms. Grab the hard drives and any legal envelopes. Boss said don't touch the woman unless she fights.""

""And the kids?""

""Take their DNA swabs. Boss needs proof by sunrise.""

Claire moved silently into the walk-in closet. She pressed her palm against the rear mahogany panel, feeling for the hidden mechanical latch. With a soft click, the panel slid backward, opening into a service lift originally designed for laundry, leading down to the underground garage.

She slid inside and pulled the partition shut just as the bedroom door was kicked off its hinges. Through the hairline crack of the panel, she saw the beam of a tactical flashlight sweep across the empty cribs.

""They're gone!"" a voice cursed. ""Check the windows! She couldn't have gone far!""

Claire held her breath, pressing both palms gently against the babies’ backs. As if sensing their mother's terror, neither child made a sound. The pneumatic lift descended smoothly into the concrete garage below.

Stepping out into the chilly subterranean air, Claire made her way to an unremarkable silver sedan parked in the far stall. Her hand reached for the driver's handle, but a click echoed behind her neck.

""Leaving so soon, Mrs. Vance?"" a voice rasped from the shadows.

Claire froze. She turned slowly to face the silhouette of Julian’s head of private security, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at her chest.
