SILENT POISON, BROKEN VOWS / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

Marcus left Maya under the careful watch of Nia’s mother, Evelyn, who had arrived at the hospital in tears, clutching her granddaughter like a lifeline. ""Go home and find out what happened,"" Evelyn urged, her voice shaking with quiet fury. ""Find whoever did this to my girl.""

Driving back to the residence felt surreal. The massive stone home that had once represented peace and prosperity now felt like a mausoleum. Police tape was strung across the master suite, but Detective Miller allowed Marcus into his private home office on the ground floor.

The mahogany office was silent. Marcus walked behind the heavy desk and swung the oil painting away from the wall, exposing the biometric steel wall safe. He pressed his thumb against the scanner. A green light flashed, followed by a soft mechanical click.

The heavy door swung open.

The velvet-lined interior was ransacked. The emergency cash reserve—nearly fifty thousand dollars—was gone. The family passports were missing. But most devastating of all, the sealed folder containing the Vance Logistics share certificates and the revocable living trust was completely empty. In its place lay a single, crisp legal document dated three days prior.

Marcus picked it up with trembling hands. It was a power of attorney and share transfer agreement, bearing Nia’s signature alongside his own. It granted total operational control of the logistics firm to an offshore entity named Aegis Holdings Ltd.

""This isn't my signature,"" Marcus whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. ""And Nia was too weak to sign anything this week.""

Detective Miller stepped into the study, watching Marcus closely. ""Forgery?""

""Beyond that,"" Marcus said, looking at the notary stamp on the bottom right corner. The stamp belonged to a public notary whose office was in the downtown financial district. ""Vanessa had access to our personal seals and legal files. She did our corporate filings.""

""Mr. Vance,"" Miller said, taking out a small notepad. ""Our traffic cameras picked up Vanessa’s vehicle twenty minutes ago near the marina district. She abandoned the car near Pier 14.""

""And the passenger?""

""We couldn't get a clear facial match from the highway toll booth,"" Miller admitted. ""The passenger kept the visor down. But highway patrol found a burner phone discarded inside the vehicle’s glove box. The last outbound call was made to a private hangar at Montgomery Airfield.""

Marcus’s blood ran cold. Julian held a private pilot's license. The pieces were locking together into a horrifying pattern: the slow poisoning of Nia was meant to distract Marcus, keeping him preoccupied while the company was systematically looted and signed away.

Suddenly, Marcus’s phone rang. It was an unlisted line.

Marcus answered and set it to speaker. ""Who is this?""

A smooth, mocking voice purred through the speaker. ""You were always the responsible son, Marcus. Always building empires. But you never paid attention to the foundation beneath your feet.""

May you like

""Julian,"" Marcus spat, his hands curling into fists. ""What did you do to my wife?""

""I didn't do anything,"" Julian chuckled softly. ""Vanessa handled the domestic chores. But if I were you, Marcus, I wouldn't spend too much time chasing paper in your study. Check Nia’s IV pump at the hospital. Vanessa never leaves loose ends.""
