Chapter 9 - The Siege of Room 412

The rain began to fall in sheets against the hospital windows as dusk settled over the city. Outside St. Jude Memorial, police cruisers lined the perimeter, their red and blue strobe lights cutting through the darkness.
Marcus stood beside Nia’s bed in the ICU. The swelling in her brain had finally begun to subside, according to Dr. Reyes, but she remained deeply sedated, a symphony of machines keeping her alive. Maya sat quietly in the corner on a makeshift cot, clutching a worn teddy bear, her small eyes darting nervously every time thunder rattled the glass.
""He won't make it past the lobby, Marcus,"" Detective Miller assured him, checking his Glock 19 before holstering it. ""We’ve got federal marshals on every exit, and the coast guard is combing the southern inlet.""
""Julian doesn't use front doors,"" Marcus replied, his eyes fixed on Nia’s pale face. ""He knows this hospital. When Vance Logistics handled the logistics contract for the medical center’s construction five years ago, Julian oversaw the subterranean utility tunnels connecting the main facility to the steam plant across the street.""
Miller’s eyes widened. ""Those tunnels were supposed to be sealed after the retrofit.""
Before Miller could reach for his radio, the lights overhead flickered violently. Once. Twice.
Then the room plunged into absolute blackness.
The hum of the ventilators stuttered, followed by the shrill, synchronized alarms of emergency battery backups activating across the floor. An eerie red glow illuminated the corridor as the emergency exit signs switched on.
""Back-up generators should kick in within ten seconds,"" Miller said, drawing his weapon and stepping toward the doorway. ""Stay here.""
Ten seconds passed. The main power remained dead.
A sudden, sharp pop echoed from the corridor—the unmistakable crack of a suppressed firearm. Then another.
""Dada!"" Maya whimpered, scrambling toward Marcus. Marcus scooped her into his arms, pushing her behind Nia’s bed into the narrow alcove behind the oxygen monitors.
""Stay down, Maya. Cover your ears,"" Marcus whispered urgently.
Miller peered into the red-lit hallway. A shadow darted across the glass partition. Miller raised his weapon, shouting, ""Police! Drop your—""
A three-round burst shattered the doorframe. Miller gasped, clutching his shoulder as he spun backward, blood staining his shirt as he collapsed against the linoleum.
Marcus lunged forward, grabbing Miller’s fallen firearm from the floor just as the door kicked open.

Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain and mud, his eyes wide with adrenaline and madness, stood Julian. In his gloved hands, he held a tactical submachine gun.
""Family reunions are always so messy,"" Julian hissed, raising his weapon straight toward Nia’s bed.
