Chapter 2 - Code Blue

The wail of the sirens tore through the quiet morning neighborhood. Paramedics stormed up the spiral staircase with medical kits, oxygen tanks, and a portable stretcher. Marcus stood against the corridor wall, shielding Maya’s face against his chest so she wouldn’t witness the brutal machinery of emergency resuscitation.

""Female, mid-thirties, respiratory depression, pinpoint pupils, heart rate forty-two and dropping!"" the lead paramedic shouted, tearing open an ampoule of Narcan and flumazenil while another bagged Nia with high-flow oxygen. ""Pushing antagonist! Start compressions if the pulse drops below thirty!""

""Is she going to make it?"" Marcus choked out, his knuckles white against Maya’s floral pajamas.

The paramedic didn’t look up. ""She’s aspirating. We need to intubate on scene. Get the gurney ready!""

Every second stretched into eternity. Marcus remembered the silhouette in Vanessa’s passenger seat. It had looked undeniably like Julian—Marcus’s estranged half-brother and former business partner, a man banished from the family firm two years prior after an audit uncovered millions missing from their trust accounts. Had Vanessa’s sudden arrival at their home been a calculated infiltration rather than a cry for family refuge?

""Pulse stabilized at fifty-four! Move her out!"" The paramedics hoisted Nia onto the stretcher, securing straps across her lifeless frame. A plastic tube protruded from her mouth, connected to an ambu-bag being squeezed in steady, mechanical rhythms.

Marcus rushed down the stairs behind them. Detective Raymond Miller from the local precinct had already arrived, blocking the doorway with two patrol officers. ""Mr. Vance? We got the dispatch call regarding an intentional overdose.""

""It wasn't an overdose,"" Marcus said, thrusting the orange bottle into an evidence bag Miller held open. ""My sister-in-law, Vanessa Cole, slipped this into my wife’s drink. My daughter saw her. And Vanessa just took off heading south toward the highway.""

Miller took note, his face grim. ""We’ll issue an APB. But you need to ride with your wife, Mr. Vance.""

Marcus strapped Maya into the back of his SUV, following the screaming ambulance through the dawn traffic toward St. Jude Memorial. Inside the emergency bay, doors burst open, and Nia was swallowed into Trauma Room 3 beneath harsh fluorescent lights.

Marcus paced the linoleum waiting area, Maya asleep from exhaustion on a vinyl chair. Two hours later, Dr. Cynthia Reyes emerged, pulling down her surgical mask. ""She survived the initial arrest, Marcus. But the toxin caused severe cerebral hypoxia. We placed her in a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling.""

Marcus swallowed hard. ""Will she wake up?""

""The next forty-eight hours will tell,"" Dr. Reyes said softly. ""However, blood toxicology showed something else. This wasn't a single dose. There are traces of heavy metals and slow-acting cardiac glycosides accumulated in her tissue over weeks.""

Marcus stared at her, horrified. ""Weeks?""

Before the doctor could answer, Marcus’s phone buzzed with an unknown encrypted text message: Check the safe in your study, big brother. You signed away everything while she was sleeping.
