Chapter 8 - The Sealed Truth

The safe deposit box at First National Bank required Evelyn’s secondary key and a court emergency order that Detective Miller pushed through within the hour.

Marcus sat at a private viewing table in the bank's subterranean vault room. The long metal box slid open with a metallic scrape. Inside lay a leather-bound diary, a digital thumb drive, and an envelope addressed simply to Marcus, My Love.

With hands that felt completely disconnected from his body, Marcus tore open the envelope. The handwriting was unmistakable—Nia’s elegant, flowing script, dated six months ago.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, it means the darkness I’ve been trying to shield you from has finally caught up to us. Three years ago, before we were married, Julian tried to force himself on me during a corporate retreat in Aspen. I fought him off and fled, but I was terrified that telling you would ignite a war that would destroy the company and tear your family apart.

When Maya was born, Julian threatened to claim paternity using fabricated records he bought through corrupt lab technicians. He swore that if I told you the truth, he would produce forged documents to humiliate you publicly and take Maya away through endless custody battles.

I ran a clandestine, certified genetic test through Johns Hopkins last year using an independent courier. The authentic, legally sealed results are on the flash drive in this box. Maya is your daughter, Marcus. Purely and entirely yours. She has your heart, your eyes, and your blood.

Vanessa discovered the real files when she broke into my study. She works for him. She has always worked for him. If anything happens to me, look at the offshore contracts Julian had you sign. There is a clause hidden under Section 12 that names—

Marcus stopped reading. Tears splashed onto the delicate paper, smearing the ink. He plunged the thumb drive into his laptop. The certified laboratory report from Johns Hopkins flashed on screen: Paternal match between Marcus Vance and Maya Vance: 99.99%. Probability of paternity: Confirmed.

A massive weight lifted from Marcus’s chest, instantly replaced by an inferno of pure, unadulterated rage. Nia had suffered in silence, carrying the burden of Julian’s psychological terror alone to protect him, while Julian and Vanessa methodically poisoned her body to silence her forever.

""Agent Harris,"" Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register of lethal calm. ""Did that Gulfstream land in San Juan?""

Harris checked his radio unit, his expression suddenly darkening. ""Marcus... we have a catastrophic situation.""

Marcus stood up abruptly. ""What happened?""

""The plane didn't land in Puerto Rico,"" Harris said grimly. ""Julian disengaged the hydraulic fuses manually from inside the cockpit avionics bay. The aircraft diverted to an unregistered private dirt runway in the Dominican Republic. Local police just found the aircraft abandoned in a sugar cane field.""

""And Julian?""

May you like

""Gone. But local authorities intercepted a satellite transmission originating from the border. Julian didn't flee to South America. He chartered a high-speed speedboat heading back toward the Florida coast.""

Marcus clenched his fists. ""He’s coming back here.""
