Chapter 14 - The Fall of Titans

The roar of helicopter blades shattered the night sky above the Cross manor. Floodlights powerful enough to turn midnight into midday illuminated the manicured lawns through the library windows.
""This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! The estate is surrounded! Step away from all weapons and exit with your hands raised!"" a megaphone boomed from a Blackhawk helicopter hovering fifty feet above the courtyard.
Julian panicked, his eyes wild with terror. ""You set us up!"" he screamed, swinging his pistol toward Marcus.
Briggs fired instantly. A single round struck Julian’s gun hand, sending the weapon flying into the fireplace as Julian collapsed to the floor, screaming and clutching his shattered wrist.
Arthur Cross stood paralyzed, the glass of scotch slipping from his fingers and shattering across the Persian rug. ""Marcus... think about what you're doing. I made you. I gave you your first contract. We can settle this. I have fifty million in bearer bonds in the safe—""
""Save it for your defense attorney, Arthur,"" Marcus said quietly.
The front doors of the manor were breached with explosive force. A tactical strike team poured into the library, pinning Arthur to his desk and securing the writhing Julian on the floor. Agent Harris strode into the room, holding up a federal arrest warrant signed by the Chief Justice of the District Court.
""Arthur Cross, Julian Vance, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate terrorism,"" Harris declared, his voice ringing through the ruined room.
Arthur looked at Marcus as the agents clicked heavy cuffs onto his wrists. The arrogance had vanished from his aged face, replaced by the hollow realization of total ruin. ""You destroyed everything we built, Marcus.""
""No,"" Marcus replied, looking down at his former mentor. ""You destroyed it the moment you touched my family.""
Marcus walked out of the estate into the cool night air. Rain had washed the atmosphere clean, leaving the scent of damp earth and pine trees. The helicopters circled overhead, their searchlights guiding police cruisers up the winding driveway.
Marcus climbed back into his vehicle, exhaling a breath he felt like he had been holding for weeks. He picked up his phone and dialed the private suite at St. Jude.
The line connected on the first ring. ""Marcus?"" Nia’s voice was warm, steady, and clear.
""It’s over, Nia,"" Marcus said, his voice softening. ""Both of them. It’s completely over.""

A long silence followed, filled with the sound of quiet, joyful tears on the other end of the line. ""Come home to us,"" she whispered.
""I’m on my way,"" Marcus said.
