Chapter 10 - Coffee in the Gray Light

By five in the morning, the fever had broken. Leo was resting peacefully under a small white hospital blanket, his breathing deep and even.

Julian walked back from the hospital cafeteria carrying two paper cups of terrible coffee. He placed one in Clara’s hands and sat on the low bench next to her, his eyes rimmed with red exhaustion.

"Drink it," he murmured. "It tastes like burnt cardboard, but it's warm."

Clara took a sip, letting out a long, weary breath. "Thank you for driving like a madman."

"I would have driven through a brick wall if it meant getting him here thirty seconds sooner," Julian said simply. He stared at his scuffed leather boots. "Clara... when he was screaming during that IV, I realized something terrifying."

"What?"

"I’ve spent my entire life chasing control," he whispered. "Contracts, acquisitions, market dominance. But sitting there, seeing him in pain... I realized that love is the complete surrender of control. You open your chest and let the world hold a blade to your heart. How did you do it alone for fourteen months without losing your mind?"

Clara looked at him, her gaze soft, stripped of all historical bitterness.

"You don't think about the terror, Julian. You just think about their breakfast, their shoes, their smiles when they wake up. Love isn't a theory. It's doing the dishes at midnight when your back aches."

Julian reached over, hesitating for a fraction of a second, before gently resting his hand over hers. This time, Clara did not pull away. Her fingers slowly curled around his, accepting the warmth.
