Chapter 11 - The Park and the Public

Three weeks later, the spring sun finally banished the winter chill from Manhattan.

The paparazzi had caught wind of the mystery woman and child residing at the penthouse. When Julian, Clara, and Leo walked out the main entrance of the building toward Central Park, a dozen photographers converged like vultures, their shutters firing in rapid, deafening succession.

"Mr. Vance! Is this your secret child?"

"Who is the mother, Julian?"

"Does the board know about this heir?"

Security guards rushed forward to push the reporters back, but Julian raised a single hand, stopping them.

He adjusted Leo on his hip. The boy was wearing a bright yellow knitted cap, looking around at the flashing lights with wide curiosity. Julian stepped directly in front of the microphones, placing his other arm firmly around Clara’s waist, drawing her close against his side.

"This is not a corporate announcement," Julian said, his voice ringing out clearly over the clamor of the sidewalk. "This is my family. This is Clara Bennett, and this is our son, Leo Vance."

A collective murmur rippled through the press corps.

"For fourteen months, I was blind to the greatest gift of my life because of cowardice and arrogance," Julian continued, looking straight into the lenses. "I have officially resigned my position as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Capital, effective at the end of this quarter. My family has spent generations building wealth at the expense of human warmth. That cycle ends with me. My only job from this day forward is being a worthy father and a devoted partner."

Beside him, Clara looked up at Julian, her heart turning over in her chest. She had never asked him to surrender his empire. But seeing him stand there—unashamed, radiant in his vulnerability—she knew the man she loved had finally come home.
