Chapter 8 - The Unraveling Matriarch

The room fell into an agonizing silence. Leo, sensing the tension, dropped his wooden block and scurried to Clara, wrapping his arms around her knees. Clara scooped him up, her posture protective but calm.

"You were complicit, weren't you, Eleanor?" Clara asked quietly. "Richard didn't act without your consent. You knew about my mother’s care facility."

Eleanor’s facade began to splinter. The rigid matriarch of Park Avenue looked suddenly frail against the backdrop of Julian’s towering resentment.

"We protected the name," Eleanor said, though her voice lacked its usual steel. "We sacrificed everything for the Vance legacy. My marriage was an arrangement, Julian! My entire life was built on duty! Do you think I wanted to live in a house devoid of affection for forty years? We did what was required to preserve what generations built!"

"And look at what it built," Julian gestured around the vast, silent penthouse. "A tomb of glass and marble. A father who died alone in an office chair. A son who didn't know his own flesh and blood. Is this the greatness you sacrificed your humanity for?"

Eleanor looked down at her gloved hands. Her shoulders trembled slightly. Slowly, she raised her eyes to look at Leo. The toddler was watching her with innocent curiosity, tilting his head.

"He... he has your father's curls," Eleanor whispered, a genuine tear finally breaking through her composed veneer. "Before Richard became cruel... when we were twenty... he had curls just like that."

"His name is Leo," Clara said, her voice extending an unexpected olive branch. "And he will never know cruelty. Not from the world, and not from this family."

Eleanor bowed her head, unable to speak, and quietly stepped back into the elevator.
