Chapter 15 - The Golden Elevator

On a crisp November morning, Julian, Clara, and two-year-old Leo stood once again in the private elevator corridor of the penthouse building.
Julian had finalized the sale of the penthouse that morning, liquidating the last monument of his former life to permanently endow the foundation. They had returned one final time to hand over the keys.
Leo, now running with confident, uncoordinated toddler speed, zipped across the marble floor in his tiny sneakers, chasing a yellow tennis ball.
The elevator doors chimed, opening with that same smooth, familiar whisper.
Julian looked at the golden doors, then looked down at Clara. She wore a tailored camel coat, her hair flowing freely around her shoulders, looking radiant and serene. She slipped her hand into his, their fingers interlacing effortlessly.
Leo scooped up his ball, ran back to them, and wedged himself between their legs, gripping Julian’s trouser leg with one hand and Clara’s coat with the other.
"Daddy, go?" Leo asked, pointing toward the open elevator.
Julian looked down at his son, then up at his wife. The cold marble, the intimidating gold, the oppressive architecture of wealth had lost all its power over them. It was no longer a stage for tragedy; it was merely a doorway they had passed through to find their way home.

"Yes, Leo," Julian smiled, scooping his son up into his arms while pulling Clara close. "Let's go home."
The elevator doors closed, carrying them together into a bright and boundless future.
