Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Marble

By midnight, Leo was fast asleep in the center of Julian’s oversized king bed, barricaded safely by feather pillows. Julian had shed his jacket and tie; his shirt sleeves were rolled to his forearms, revealing the tense veins of a man running purely on adrenaline.
In the kitchen, two mugs of black coffee cooled untouched between them.
"I need you to tell me everything," Julian said, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial hush so as not to wake the boy down the hall. "Every single detail of the day you left. Don't spare me. If my family destroyed us, I need to know how deeply the rot goes."
Clara wrapped her palms around the warm ceramic. "The morning I found out I was pregnant, I went to your father’s office first. You were in Tokyo negotiating the shipping merger. I was young, naive, and foolish enough to think he would welcome a grandchild."
A bitter smile touched her lips.
"Richard Vance didn't raise his voice," she continued. "He simply slid a nondisclosure agreement across his mahogany desk along with surveillance photos of my mother’s assisted living facility. He told me that an illegitimate child from a lower-class graphic designer would trigger a morality clause in your grandfather’s trust, costing you the chairmanship. He said if I loved you, I would take a settlement and disappear. If I didn't, he would pull my mother’s medical funding."
Julian’s fists clenched on the quartz counter until his knuckles went bone-white. The silence that followed was suffocating.

"And you thought I would choose the chair over you?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with profound agony.
"You were twenty-nine, Julian. You had dedicated your entire life to earning his approval," Clara whispered. "I didn't take his money. Not a single cent. But I took my dignity, and I protected my son."
