Chapter 2 - The Cold Light of Reality

The penthouse door clicked unlocked. Clara hesitated on the threshold of the vast, minimalist living room. Floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked Central Park, bathed in the indigo glow of dusk. Everything inside smelled of cedar, polished slate, and expensive solitude. It was an immaculate museum of a man who had chosen isolation as his armor.

"Sit down, please," Julian said, his hand hovering near Clara’s elbow without daring to make physical contact. "Can I... may I hold him?"

Clara looked at Julian’s outstretched arms. For a year, she had practiced this conversation in cramped laundromats and crowded subway cars, convinced she would feel righteous anger. But watching Julian tremble—a man who had faced down hostile takeovers without blinking—she saw only an aching ruin.

"Support his neck and lower back," Clara instructed quietly. "He’s heavy for his age."

Julian gathered the child into his chest with reverent terror. His broad hands, accustomed to signing contracts worth billions, cradled the boy as though he were blown glass. Leo rested his cheek against Julian’s white shirt, letting out a soft, milky sigh. The boy’s ear pressed directly over Julian’s erratic heartbeat.

"He looks like you," Julian murmured, burying his face in Leo’s soft curls. "His eyes... Clara, they have your warmth, but the shape is mine."

"He has your stubborn streak, too," Clara murmured, walking to the leather sofa but remaining upright, unwilling to surrender her vigilance. "He refuses to sleep unless someone hums that old Chopin nocturne you used to play on the Steinway."

Julian lifted his head, his eyes reddened and swollen. "You remembered?"

"I couldn't forget even when I tried to survive," she answered. "And believe me, Julian. For fourteen months, I tried."
