Chapter 12 - A Different Kind of Ledger

Julian’s resignation sent shockwaves through Wall Street, but inside the brownstone they eventually rented in Brooklyn, the only index that mattered was Leo’s milestones.

Julian traded tailored suits for soft cotton t-shirts and denim. He learned how to puree sweet potatoes without leaving lumps. He learned that Leo hated bath toys shaped like ducks but adored wooden spoons. He discovered that true strength lay not in imposing his will on others, but in holding space for a toddler’s tears.

One evening, after Leo had fallen asleep in his crib, Clara found Julian sitting at the rustic dining table, a single envelope resting before him.

It was the official DNA paternity test that his legal team had initiated during their first week together. The seal was still unbroken.

"You never opened it," Clara said softly, sitting opposite him.

Julian picked up the envelope, looked at it for a moment, and then calmly tore it into four pieces, tossing them into the recycling bin.

"I didn't need a laboratory to tell me he was mine the second his eyes met mine in that hallway," Julian said. He looked at Clara, his gaze deep and steady. "And even if biology had told a different story, my heart wouldn't have cared. I chose him the moment I held him. And I choose you."

Clara swallowed past the lump in her throat. "Julian..."

"I’m not asking for your forgiveness overnight, Clara," he said gently, reaching across the table. "You built a life from scratch while I was hiding behind steel walls. All I ask is for the privilege of helping you carry it."

Clara reached out, her fingers tangling with his. "We’re already carrying it together."
