Chapter 5 - A Hand in the Darkness

Dawn broke over the city in streaks of pale rose and lavender. Julian hadn't slept for a minute.
When Clara walked quietly into the bedroom, she found Julian sitting cross-legged on the hardwood floor beside the bed, his head resting against the mattress frame. His hand was outstretched, palm open upward, resting just inches from where Leo’s tiny, starfish-shaped fingers twitched in slumber.
Hearing her footsteps, Julian didn't flinch. "I was terrified that if I closed my eyes, the morning would erase both of you."
"He wakes up hungry," Clara said, her tone softening slightly. "He likes oatmeal with mashed banana. Do you even have food in this place, Julian?"
Julian stood, rubbing his tired face. "My housekeeper stocks the fridge. But Clara... I don't know how to make oatmeal. I’ve lived on room service and espresso for five years."
For the first time in over a year, the ghost of an amused smile flickered on Clara's lips. "Then you'd better learn. Come on."
In the kitchen, the corporate magnate stood under the harsh task lighting, clumsily measuring oats under Clara’s patient direction. When Leo woke up, babbling softly from the hallway, Julian dropped the wooden spoon as if it had caught fire.
"Go get him," Clara urged gently. "Don't rush. Speak softly so you don't startle him."
Julian walked down the hall with cautious steps. When he returned, Leo was nestled securely against his shoulder, sucking his thumb and tugging lazily at Julian’s messy hair. For a second, the light hit them both at the same angle—the same furrowed brow, the same stubborn mouth.

"Look at that," Clara murmured, stirring the pot. "He already knows your pulse."
Julian kissed the crown of the boy's head. "He’s the only good thing I’ve ever had a hand in creating."
