Chapter 12 - Unraveling the Empire

The fallout was swift, catastrophic, and total. Within forty-eight hours of the court hearing, the digital archive leaked by Elena had exploded across every major news network, transforming Catherine from a beloved Manhattan socialite into a pariah overnight. Board members who had once bowed to her influence now distanced themselves completely, issuing emergency press statements condemning her actions. Federal investigators, tipped off by the financial records included in Clara’s archive, moved in to audit the foundation accounts, uncovering millions in illicitly diverted funds. Back at the penthouse, the once-glorious apartment felt hollow and haunted. Servants had already packed their belongings and left, leaving Catherine alone in the massive, echoing rooms surrounded by the very luxury she had killed her soul to maintain. Her phone rang continuously on the marble kitchen island—lawyers dropping her representation, sponsors canceling endorsement deals, and creditors demanding immediate settlement of mounting debts. She picked up the receiver with a shaking hand, only to hear the automated voice of her bank notifying her of a total asset freeze. The mask of perfection had shattered beyond repair, revealing the cold, empty void underneath. Just as she moved to throw the phone against the wall, heavy footsteps echoed outside her private elevator. The doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing not reporters or creditors, but two federal marshals holding an arrest warrant with her name clearly printed at the top.
