Chapter 13 - Judgment Day

The final gavel of the family court echoed with finality, settling a battle that had torn lives apart and exposed the darkest corners of privilege. Judge Vance delivered his verdict without hesitation, granting Richard sole, unconditional physical and legal custody of Lily, while issuing a permanent, unappealable restraining order against Catherine. Furthermore, due to the severity of the financial fraud and criminal neglect uncovered during the proceedings, Catherine was remanded to federal custody pending trial, with no option for bail. As the marshals escorted her out of the courtroom in handcuffs, her head bowed low to hide her face from the flashes of cameras, she caught a brief glimpse of Richard sitting across the aisle. Richard didn't look at her with anger or vengeance; his expression was one of profound, heavy pity—the ultimate insult to a woman whose entire existence was built on vanity and control. He stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket, and walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight. Waiting for him on the grand stone steps was Elena, holding a small envelope containing the final court-stamped custody papers. “It's over, Richard,” Elena said softly, offering a rare, genuine smile. “She can never touch Lily again.” Richard let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for years, the weight finally lifting from his shoulders. But before they could celebrate, his phone buzzed in his pocket with a text message from the mountain cabin caretaker telling him that Lily was waiting by the front window for him to come home.
