Chapter 14 - Rebuilding Foundations

The move back to the penthouse was swift, but not to live in it—to clear away the ghosts of the past. Richard hired a specialized crew to strip the apartment down to its bare framework, removing every trace of the cold, sterile luxury that had poisoned their lives for years. He packed up Lily’s old clothes, the ones stained with shoe polish and tears, and burned them in a bonfire at the mountain cabin, symbolizing a complete and total cleansing of their past trauma. They decided to leave the city behind entirely, purchasing a sunlit, sprawling farmhouse nestled along the coast of Maine, surrounded by tall oak trees, wild gardens, and the soothing sound of crashing ocean waves. On a bright Saturday morning, Richard and Lily stood in the center of the new living room, surrounded by cardboard boxes waiting to be unpacked. The walls were painted warm pastel yellows and soft blues, and the floors were made of natural, untreated wood that didn't demand perfection or polish. Lily sat cross-legged on the rug, crayons scattered around her as she drew a picture of a big house with a sun in the sky, her face glowing with a genuine, carefree smile that Richard hadn't seen in years. He walked over, sitting down beside her on the floor, and picked up one of her drawings. “Is this our new home, sweetie?” he asked gently. Lily nodded enthusiastically, her hazel eyes shining with hope. “Yes, Daddy. And there are no shoes in this house—only running shoes for the beach!” Richard laughed, pulling her into a warm bear hug that filled the empty rooms with the sound of pure, unadulterated joy.
