Chapter 8 - The Hunt for the Truth

The rain hammered relentlessly against the windshield of Richard’s car as he navigated the narrow, shadowy alleys of the industrial district, finally pulling up in front of a decaying brick apartment building with flickering neon signs. The address Elena had given him led to a stairwell that smelled of damp concrete and old memories. He climbed three flights of stairs in the dim light, finally stopping in front of apartment 4B. The door was slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light spilling out onto the dirty hallway floor. A cold shiver ran down Richard’s spine. He pushed the door open slowly, the hinges groaning in protest, and stepped into the small, cramped living room. Boxes were stacked everywhere—packing tape half-peeled, suitcases open on the floor. It looked like someone had been preparing to leave in a frantic hurry. “Clara?” Richard called out cautiously, his hand hovering near his coat pocket. A sudden crash from the kitchenette made him spin around. Emerging from the shadows was an older woman with tired eyes and graying hair, holding a shattered ceramic mug that had slipped from her hands in fright. She took a step back, pressing herself against the kitchen counter, her chest heaving as she recognized the man standing in her doorway. “Mr. Vance… you shouldn't be here,” Clara stammered, her voice shaking violently. “If Mrs. Vance finds out I spoke to you—if she knows you found me—she’ll destroy what's left of my life.” Richard held his hands up in a placating gesture, taking slow, deliberate steps forward. “Clara, I’m not here to hurt you. I need your help to protect my daughter. I know what Catherine made you do to Lily... and I know you have proof,” he said earnestly, his voice laced with desperate pleading. Clara stared at him for a long, agonizing moment, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at the man who had been completely blind to the abuse happening under his own roof. With trembling fingers, she reached behind the microwave and pulled out a heavy, water-damaged flash drive, setting it gently on the counter. “This has every security footage backup, every audio recording of her threats, and every medical note from the clinic I took the little girl to behind her back,” Clara whispered. Suddenly, the sound of screeching tires echoed from the street below, followed by heavy footsteps pounding up the concrete stairwell.
