Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The morning air in the city was biting and gray, reflecting the storm brewing inside Richard’s mind as he sat across from Elena Vance, his estranged aunt and a brilliant criminal defense attorney who had long since distanced herself from the family's toxic inner circle. They sat in a dimly lit corner booth of an out-of-the-way diner, miles away from the prying eyes of the tabloid press. Elena stirred her black coffee slowly, her sharp eyes studying the legal documents Richard had slammed onto the table. “Catherine is playing a high-stakes game of psychological warfare, Richard, and she’s using Lily as a pawn to protect her social standing and her access to your trust funds,” Elena stated bluntly, taking a sip of her coffee. “If you walk back into that penthouse tomorrow morning, she wins. She will trap you in a legal web of domestic abuse allegations that you will never claw your way out of.” Richard leaned forward, resting his elbows on the sticky tabletop, his face etched with exhaustion and unyielding determination. “Then what do we do, Elena? If I stay away, they brand me a fugitive and take my daughter away forever. If I go back, they trap me. There has to be a weak spot in her armor,” he insisted, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. Elena paused, looking around the empty diner before leaning in close across the table, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “There is one person who knows every single skeleton in Catherine’s closet—someone who was fired three weeks ago after witnessing too much.” Richard’s eyes narrowed. “Who?” Elena reached into her leather bag and slid a folded slip of paper across the table containing an address in a run-down district on the other side of town. “A former maid named Clara. But you’ll have to find her before Catherine’s private investigators do.”
