Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Corridor

The nursery wing was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp, casting long, gentle shadows across the pastel walls. Richard sat on the edge of the floral-patterned duvet, holding a warm damp cloth as he meticulously and tenderly wiped the black shoe polish from Lily’s tiny, trembling fingers. Every motion was deliberate and filled with a remorse that weighed heavily on his soul; he had been so consumed by corporate battles and boardrooms that he had been completely blind to the tyranny happening inside his own home. Lily sniffled softly, her big, hopeful hazel eyes looking up at him with a mixture of fear and lingering disbelief. “Daddy, am I a bad girl?” she whispered, her voice cracking with the vulnerability of a child who had been forced to grow up far too soon. Richard’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces at her words, his hand freezing over hers before he gently kissed her knuckles. “Never, my sweet angel. You are the best thing in my life, and no one will ever make you do that again, I promise you,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion. He tucked the blankets securely around her shoulders, stroking her messy hair until her breathing slowed and her heavy eyelids finally drifted shut in exhaustion. But sleep did not come easily for Richard. He stood up quietly, slipping out into the dimly lit hallway where the heavy silence pressed against his eardrums. He walked toward the end of the corridor, stopping in front of the master suite where the light beneath the door leaked onto the hardwood floor. Before he could raise his hand to knock, the door creaked open, revealing Catherine standing there with a glass of scotch in her hand, her expression completely devoid of remorse. She took a slow sip, looking him up and down with absolute disdain. “You made a catastrophic mess downstairs, Richard,” she murmured, her voice dripping with venom. “And you have no idea what consequences are waiting for you tomorrow morning.”
