Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

The opulent ballroom fell into a suffocating, breathless silence. The crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to cast cold, unforgiving light upon the sparkling diamonds lying bare on the polished marble floor. Beside the spilled gems lay Victoria’s shimmering silver clutch, popped wide open like a confession she could never take back. Whispers began to rustle through the gathered elite like a dry winter wind.
Julian stood like a carved stone monument, his tailored black tuxedo broad and unyielding. In his arms, six-year-old Lily trembled, her small face buried deeply into the crook of his neck. Her soft sobs muffled against his lapel were the only sound piercing the room. The faint red welts on her cheek and the purple shadow of a bruise on her frail arm burned against Julian's eyes. Beside him, his eleven-year-old son, Leo, stepped forward, his eyes blazing with an indignation far beyond his years.
""Julian, please... let me explain,"" Victoria choked out, her composed mask shattering into frantic despair. She reached a manicured hand toward him, her champagne-sequined gown catching the light in mocking brilliance. ""It isn’t what it looks like. Someone framed me! Why would I steal my own stepdaughter's mother’s heirloom?""
""Save your breath, Victoria,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy register that made even the onlookers step back. ""You accused a six-year-old girl of being a thief. You laid your hands on my daughter in front of hundreds of people.""
Julian looked down at the necklace—the very necklace his late wife, Clara, had left for Lily before succumbing to illness four years ago. Victoria had claimed it went missing from the master vault that morning, publicly seizing Lily by the wrist just moments ago and demanding the child confess. Only Leo had noticed the distinctive shimmer tucked hastily under Victoria’s arm.
Victoria's gaze darted around the ballroom, searching for an ally among the wealthy patrons she had entertained for years, but eyes looked away, champagne flutes were lowered, and lips pressed into tight grimaces of disgust. Julian turned his back on her, signaling two private security guards who stepped forward to block her path.
""Get her out of my sight,"" Julian commanded without looking back. ""And have the estate gates locked against her before midnight.""
""Julian! You can't cast me out! We are married!"" she shrieked, the veneer of high society completely peeling away as guards flanked her on either side.
Julian ignored her, gently stroking Lily’s tangled curls as he escorted his children toward the private elevator. Inside the quiet mahogany cabin, Leo grabbed his father's sleeve.
""Dad,"" Leo whispered, his voice trembling now that the adrenaline was fading. ""Before the party started... I heard her on the terrace phone. She wasn't just trying to humiliate Lily.""

Julian stopped, looking down at his son's pale, resolute face. ""What did she say, Leo?""
Leo swallowed hard, his eyes dark with dread. ""She told someone that once Lily was sent away to boarding school, the transfer of Mom’s trust fund would be completed tonight.""
