THE PRICE OF CRUEL DECEIT / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - Pier 42

The rain had tapered off into a biting, freezing drizzle by three in the morning. Pier 42 was shrouded in thick ocean fog that rolled off the dark waters of the harbor, smelling of brine, rusted iron, and rotting wood. Dilapidated shipping containers were stacked like giant, forgotten tombstones along the wharf.

A rusted coastal freighter, The Iron Maiden, sat moored against the rotting pylons, its engine humming with a low, rhythmic vibration that shook the wooden planks underfoot.

Julian stepped out of a nondescript black sedan, wearing a long dark overcoat that shielded him from the sea spray. He carried a heavy leather briefcase in his left hand. Marcus and four tactical operators melted into the shadows behind the towering containers, thermal sights scanning the catwalks and cranes above.

""One heat signature on the main deck, three on the pier,"" Marcus whispered through the earpiece. ""Gregory is waiting near the loading crane. He's armed, Julian. Take no chances.""

Julian walked forward into the amber glow of a single halogen floodlight mounted on an old crane tower. The puddle beneath his boots reflected the harsh bulb.

From behind the rusty silhouette of a shipping container, a tall man stepped into the light. He wore a tailored wool coat, graying hair slicked back, and leaned casually against a cane with a silver wolf’s head handle. Despite the years, his face was unmistakably a Sinclair—sharper, harder, and devoid of any warmth.

""Julian,"" Gregory greeted, his lips curling into a smug, triumphant grin. ""Look at you. Out in the cold, running errands for your deceitful little wife. Where is Victoria? Did she lose her nerve at the sight of blood?""

Julian stopped ten paces away, setting the heavy briefcase down on the wet wooden boards. ""Victoria won't be joining us tonight, Gregory. Neither will your mercenaries.""

Gregory’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes narrowed, darting to the darkness surrounding the dock. ""So, you handled my clean-up crew. Impressive, little brother. But you were always too sentimental. If you were smart, you would have let those children go. Clara’s fortune was meant to revitalize our family's legacy, not sit in a trust fund for a weak girl who cries at shadows.""

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned. ""You came after my daughter. You paid that woman to terrorize an innocent child.""

""Innocence is a luxury for the poor, Julian!"" Gregory spat, his demeanor snapping into sudden, manic arrogance. ""That fortune belongs to the Sinclair name! I built this family’s offshore empire before our father cast me out! Clara knew it, and that’s why she hid the money behind those absurd custody clauses!""

Gregory raised his cane, and with a sharp twist, pulled a gleaming six-inch blade from its shaft. ""Did you really think you could come here alone and corner me?""

May you like

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly unbuttoned his coat. ""I didn't come here to corner you, Gregory. I came here to bury you.""

Suddenly, the floodlight above shattered in a spray of sparks.
