Chapter 10 - The Reckoning in the Fog

Total darkness consumed the pier, punctuated only by the flickering warning beacons of the distant channel. Muzzle flashes instantly lit up the misty air as two hidden snipers aboard the freighter opened fire on Julian’s position.

Julian dove behind a heavy iron bollard, the bullets tearing into the wet timber around him with deafening thwacks. ""Marcus! Neutralize the ship!"" Julian barked into his mic.

Suppressor-equipped return fire echoed from the high cranes. Marcus’s snipers answered with lethal precision; two screams followed, and two heavy splashes broke the dark water below the freighter's hull as the enemy shooters plunged into the black sea.

Gregory cursed loudly, lunging through the fog toward the freighter's gangway, his silver-hilted blade ready in his hand. But Julian emerged from the shadows like a wraith, intercepting his brother with a brutal tackle that sent them both crashing against the rusted steel side of a shipping container.

The blade sliced through Julian’s overcoat, drawing a sharp line of fire across his forearm. Julian ignored the pain, his left hand locking around Gregory’s wrist with crushing force. He slammed Gregory’s arm against the container until the blade dropped, clattering between the floorboards and falling straight into the harbor below.

""You're done, Gregory!"" Julian snarled, pinning his older brother against the cold steel, his forearm pressing against Gregory’s throat.

Gregory gasped for air, but his eyes burned with venomous spite. ""Kill me then, little brother! Go on! Show everyone what a monster you really are! But it won't change anything! Clara’s trust is already being drained as we speak!""

Julian pulled his brother closer, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that cut through the harbor wind. ""Arthur Vance woke up an hour ago, Gregory. He gave up the routing codes. The Federal Reserve froze every account connected to your Panamanian shells twenty minutes before I walked onto this dock.""

Gregory’s eyes widened in horror. The arrogant smugness evaporated into absolute, suffocating realization. ""No... no, that's impossible. The override requires two Sinclair signatures—""

""Leo remembered the password Clara whispered to him before she passed,"" Julian said, his eyes drilling into his brother’s soul. ""You forgot that Clara loved her children more than she ever feared you. You have nothing left. No money, no allies, and no way out.""

Sirens began to wail in the distance—not private security, but the synchronized roar of Coast Guard cutters and federal law enforcement converging on Pier 42. Gregory’s legs gave out, sliding down the container wall, his hands falling limp against the wet dock.

Marcus stepped out of the fog, holding his sidearm at the low ready. ""Federal marshals are boarding the ship, Julian. We need to withdraw before the perimeter locks down.""

Julian stepped back from his ruined brother, straightening his coat. He looked down at Gregory with nothing left but sheer, cold pity. ""Enjoy the darkness, Gregory. It's the only home you have left.""
