THE PRICE OF CRUEL DECEIT / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Fire and the Bloodline

The private jet tore through the night sky at maximum velocity, but to Julian, every passing second felt like an eternity in purgatory. By the time his helicopter touched down in the clearing behind the Berkshire estate, the morning sun was once again fighting through dense, gray storm clouds.

The safehouse was ablaze. Plumes of black smoke billowed into the autumn sky as local fire crews fought the inferno, their sirens echoing off the surrounding mountains. Broken glass, spent shell casings, and tactical flash canisters littered the wet gravel driveway.

Julian leaped from the chopper before the skids even touched the grass, sprinting past firefighters and police barricades.

""Julian! Over here!"" Marcus’s voice cut through the chaos.

Julian skidded to a halt near the edge of the dense pine forest. Marcus was sitting against an ambulance, a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his shoulder, his face blackened by soot. Beside him sat Mrs. Gable, clutching a blanket around her trembling frame.

""Where are they, Marcus?!"" Julian demanded, dropping to his knees, grabbing the man’s vest.

Marcus pointed with a trembling hand toward the deep mountain ridge behind the property. ""Leo led them up the old deer trail toward the abandoned logging cabin. He took my spare sidearm and Clara’s necklace. The strike team pursued them into the woods, but three minutes ago... the gunfire stopped.""

Julian didn't wait for another word. He unholstered his weapon, racked the slide, and plunged into the dripping, misty pine forest, his boots tearing through the muddy underbrush.

Branches whipped across his face, cold rain stung his eyes, but his mind was fixed on only two images: Leo’s fierce, protective glare, and Lily’s innocent, hopeful eyes. Clara had sacrificed her entire life to shield her daughter from Dominic Cross’s shadow. Julian would die ten deaths before letting that shadow swallow her.

Ten minutes into the ridge, Julian found the first body—a mercenary in black tactical gear, fallen over a ravine with a bullet wound through his chest. Leo had used the choke point perfectly. Julian’s heart swelled with agonizing pride and terror.

Reaching the crest of the hill, Julian saw the old wooden logging cabin. The door hung half-open. The forest around it was eerily, deathly quiet.

Julian approached with silent, predatory steps, raising his gun, sweeping the entrance. ""Leo? Lily?"" he whispered hoarsely.

Inside the dim cabin, rain dripped through the decaying cedar roof. Julian stepped across the threshold, his senses on high alert.

In the center of the wooden room sat an antique chair. Sitting upon it, completely alone, was six-year-old Lily. Clara’s diamond floral necklace was draped carefully over her lap. Her face was smudged with dirt, but she wasn't crying. Her big hazel eyes looked directly at Julian with a terrifying, serene stillness.

""Daddy,"" Lily whispered softly, pointing a tiny finger toward the dark cellar door standing open in the corner of the floor. ""The man who said he was my other father went down there with Leo.""

Before Julian could take a single step forward, a heavy iron bolt clicked locked from the other side of the cellar door, and Dominic Cross’s voice drifted up through the floorboards:

""Step down here, Julian, and trade your son's life for Clara's daughter."""
