Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The private penthouse atop the Sinclair Tower was dead quiet when the elevator doors slid open. The city lights below stretched across the horizon like a sea of scattered gold, indifferent to the quiet storm raging inside the family. Mrs. Gable, the trusted housekeeper who had served Clara for decades, rushed forward with a warm basin of water and soft linen towels.
""Dear God, look at her,"" Mrs. Gable murmured, tears springing to her eyes as she took Lily into her lap. Julian sat on the edge of the plush sofa, gently taking the damp cloth and cleaning the tear streaks and dust from his daughter’s bruised cheek. Every flinch the little girl made felt like a blade twisting in his chest.
""I didn't take Mommy's flowers, Daddy,"" Lily whimpered, her hazel eyes red and swollen. ""I just wanted to smell the velvet box. But she grabbed me so hard... she told me bad girls get locked in the dark.""
Julian closed his eyes, swallowing the venomous rage threatening to boil over. Clara’s diamond necklace had a floral motif; Lily often held the velvet case to feel close to her late mother. ""I know, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong. Daddy is here now. No one will ever touch you again.""
Leo sat quietly at the heavy oak dining table, his tuxedo jacket tossed aside. His small hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists. ""She took Mom's keys last week, Dad. I saw her coming out of Mom’s private study, but she lied and said she was looking for holiday decorations. I should have told you then.""
""Do not blame yourself, Leo,"" Julian said firmly, walking over to place a heavy hand on his son's shoulder. ""You stood up for your sister tonight. You exposed the truth.""
While Mrs. Gable took Lily to her bedroom to tuck her in with warm milk, Julian walked into his personal office and unlocked the heavy safe behind a panoramic painting. He pulled out the dossier on Clara’s family trust. As he flipped through the thick legal documents, his stomach dropped.
Clara had left an enormous estate valued at several hundred million dollars, protected by a strict trust clause. The funds were irrevocably tied to the surviving children, managed by Julian—unless the children were declared unfit, institutionalized, or sent into custodial boarding care under an appointed guardian's request.

Julian’s phone buzzed with an encrypted message from his head of personal security, Marcus.
Julian tapped the screen, expecting an update on Victoria’s departure from the estate. Instead, the message read: Sir, we intercepted Victoria's private vehicle near the marina. She wasn't heading to the estate. She met with Arthur Vance, your late wife’s family attorney. They just exchanged a locked briefcase.
