Chapter 13 - The Vault of Shadows

The private banking quarter of Zurich was cloaked in cold, pristine autumn fog. Stone facades that had stood for centuries guarded the immense wealth of the world’s most powerful families. Julian walked through the polished brass doors of Bankhaus Hauer, escorted directly down into the subterranean vault complex by the senior director himself.
""Mrs. Sinclair established this deposit box five years ago, Mr. Sinclair,"" the director explained, his voice hushed in the tomb-like silence of the reinforced vault. ""She specified that it should only be opened if her family trust was challenged through illegal means.""
They stopped before a massive titanium safe deposit box embedded in the stone wall. Julian placed his right hand against the biometric scanner. A soft beep echoed, the heavy electronic locks disengaged with a dull thud, and the door swung open.
Inside lay a single velvet-lined cedar box. Julian lifted it out, carrying it to a private inspection table in the center of the room. The director bowed respectfully and exited, locking the heavy steel door behind him to allow complete privacy.
Julian opened the latch.
Inside rested an antique leather-bound journal, a set of keys with an unfamiliar crest, and a medical dossier stamped with the insignia of a private clinic in Vienna.
Julian opened the dossier first. His eyes scanned the yellowing medical pages, and a suffocating dread settled into his chest.
Lily’s name was not on the adoption papers Clara had once filed—because Lily was not adopted, nor was she born from the IVF procedure Julian had believed Clara underwent when they struggled to conceive. Lily was Clara’s biological child from an earlier, forced union that Clara had fled in terror before meeting Julian.
Julian turned the page to reveal the birth certificate. The father’s name was listed as Dominic Cross—a notorious, shadowy financier known in international intelligence circles as the puppet master behind offshore black-market cartels. The same Dominic Cross who had reportedly died in an explosion seven years ago.
Julian opened Clara’s journal to the final page, where her familiar handwriting reached out to him from beyond the grave:
Julian, my love,If you are reading this, Gregory’s greed has unraveled the peace I built for our family. But Gregory was never the real danger. He was only a debt collector for Dominic. Dominic never died, Julian. He used the explosion to erase his identity, and he used Victoria to infiltrate our home. He wants his daughter back. Protect her. He is coming for Lily.
Julian’s phone buzzed sharply against the mahogany table. The caller ID was unknown, bearing a local private frequency.

Julian snatched the receiver, his heart pounding like a war drum. ""Speak.""
A deep, aristocratic voice with an icy chill answered: ""I see you found Clara’s little diary, Julian. Thank you for clearing Gregory out of the way. He was becoming far too clumsy with my daughter.""
