Chapter 6 - Blood on the Marble

The mercenary collapsed backward with a heavy thud, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the mahogany floorboards. Julian stood framed in the stairwell doorway, smoke rising faintly from the barrel of his gun, his chest heaving, his eyes wild with a feral, protective fury.
The second intruder whirled around from the corridor, raising a silenced submachine gun, but Julian was faster. Years of military training buried beneath the silk suits of a CEO took over. Julian lunged forward, slamming his shoulder into the attacker’s midsection, driving him back into a glass display cabinet. Crystal shattered into a thousand glittering shards. Julian disarmed the man with a vicious strike to the wrist and brought the butt of his weapon down hard, neutralizing the threat instantly.
The third intruder, hearing the violence, bolted toward the shattered balcony, deploying a tactical zipline anchored to the adjacent skyscraper roof. Before Julian could take aim through the whipping rain, the man jumped into the dark abyss, disappearing into the city mist.
""Leo! Lily!"" Julian shouted, dropping to his knees before the open crawl space.
Leo broke into tears, all his manufactured bravery crumbling as he threw his arms around his father’s neck. Julian gathered both of his children into a fierce embrace, burying his face in their hair, his hands trembling violently.
""You're safe. You're safe now. Daddy's here,"" Julian whispered over and over, his voice cracking.
Marcus and four armed private security operators burst into the penthouse seconds later, clearing the rooms and securing Mrs. Gable, who was shaken but uninjured. Marcus looked at the neutralized men on the floor and then knelt beside the first intruder, rifling through his tactical vest.
""Mercenaries from an offshore contractor based out of Panama,"" Marcus confirmed, standing up and presenting an encrypted radio and a laminated badge. ""Julian, this wasn't a kidnapping. It was a liquidation order. Gregory didn't want custody of the kids—he wanted them eliminated so Clara’s trust would automatically dissolve and divert to the secondary family heirs.""
Julian stared at the fallen men, a terrible coldness replacing his panic. Gregory was not just trying to steal money. He was trying to erase Clara’s lineage entirely.
""Pack everything essential,"" Julian told Mrs. Gable in a clipped, lethal tone. ""We are leaving the tower tonight. Take the armored van to the safehouse in the Berkshires.""
May you like
""Where are you going, Julian?"" Marcus asked, sensing the dangerous shift in his employer's demeanor.
Julian picked up Clara's diamond necklace from the floor where it had been kicked during the struggle, slipping the cold stones into his coat pocket. ""Victoria is waiting at the Grand Regency for her payout. She thinks she won. I'm going to deliver her final settlement.""
