Chapter 1 - The Echo of Sirens

The sterile white walls of the estate hallway seemed to absorb every breath of agony. Tyler’s boots slammed against the polished stone, his service weapon rattling in its holster, but all tactical composure evaporated the moment his eyes locked onto Maya. She was curled onto her left side, small and defenseless, her knuckles white as she cradled her belly. A translucent sheen of water and pale amber fluid pooled near her feet.
Hovering above her, Eleanor adjusted the lapel of her tailored suit. Her face was an impenetrable mask of aristocratic defiance. When Tyler forced himself between them, his chest heaving, Eleanor barely flinched.
"She has the master key to the family vault," Eleanor said, her voice chillingly measured. "She took what belongs to your bloodline, Tyler. I merely attempted to reclaim our legacy before she walked out that door."
"Get out of my sight," Tyler commanded, his voice trembling not from hesitation, but from a profound, terrifying rage.
Maya reached upward, her fingers catching the hem of his uniform trouser. "Tyler... the baby," she whispered, her lip split, her voice cracking beneath waves of sharp contractions. "She kicked me... she told me to tell you I slipped."

Tyler keyed his radio, pressing the mic directly to his lips. "Dispatch, this is Unit 204. I need priority ALS transport to 742 Evergreen Terrace. Trauma to an expectant mother. Signal zero. Start secondary units for domestic assault and felony battery. Step it up."
Outside, the distant wail of emergency sirens cut through the quiet suburban morning. Eleanor didn't run. She stood near the entryway, checking her diamond-encrusted watch with the chilling calm of someone who believed money was an absolute shield against consequence. Tyler dropped to his knees, stripping off his duty jacket to bundle it gently beneath Maya’s trembling shoulders, whispering promises that his pounding heart struggled to believe.
