Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Vance Dynasty

The preliminary hearing was held in a packed courtroom downtown. Media vans crowded the steps of the municipal courthouse, cameras flashing as Eleanor was escorted inside in handcuffs, her high-priced public defender trailing behind her.

Tyler sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in his civilian suit, holding Maya’s hand. Maya insisted on attending, wanting Eleanor to see that she had survived, that her cruelty had not broken their resolve.

Judge Henderson, a veteran jurist known for her strict adherence to the law, read through the evidence with an unreadable expression. When the state prosecutor played the hallway surveillance tape on the courtroom monitors, an audible gasp swept through the gallery. The raw, calculated malice of the attack was indisputable.

Eleanor sat at the defense table, her hands trembling, finally realizing that the world of privilege she inhabited could not rewrite video footage.

"Your Honor," the defense attorney pleaded, "my client is an aging pillar of the community with no prior criminal record. We ask for house arrest with electronic monitoring pending trial."

Judge Henderson looked over her glasses, fixing Eleanor with a gaze of unyielding condemnation.

"A true pillar of the community does not violently attack an eight-month-pregnant woman in a hallway over money," Judge Henderson ruled, her gavel poised. "The defendant poses an overt danger to the victims and presents a severe flight risk given her international financial assets. Bail is denied. Defendant will be remanded to custody until trial."

The strike of the gavel rang out like a gunshot. As Eleanor was led away through the side door, she turned back and caught Tyler’s eye. There were no words left between them. Tyler simply raised his hand, interlocking his fingers with Maya’s, turning his eyes toward the future.
