Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

Hours dragged by like centuries. Tyler paced the waiting room, refusing coffee, refusing to sit. The cold truth of human fragility hung over him. In his profession, life was often stolen in an instant; he knew how thin the thread between breath and silence truly was.
At 4:45 AM, Dr. Charles stepped through the surgical doors, still in his scrubs, his cap removed.
Tyler stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He couldn't form the words.
"She’s alive, Tyler," Dr. Charles said, a tired smile finally breaking across his weathered face. "Both of them are alive."
Tyler let out a ragged sob, his knees buckling until the doctor steadied him.
"Maya came through the surgery well," Dr. Charles continued. "She lost a significant amount of blood, but the transfusion stabilized her. She's resting in recovery. Now, your daughter... she was born weighing three pounds, four ounces. Her lungs are underdeveloped, and she has a difficult road ahead in the neonatal intensive care unit, but she is breathing with respiratory support. She is a fighter."
"Can I see them?"
"Maya is still under sedation, but you can see your daughter in the NICU right now."

Walking into the darkened room filled with glowing monitors and incubators, Tyler approached a small glass enclosure. Inside lay a tiny human being, no larger than his forearm, her chest rising and falling in rapid rhythm under the gentle hiss of the CPAP machine. Her tiny fingers, perfectly formed, were curled into miniature fists.
Tyler pressed his fingertip against the incubator's glove port. The infant’s hand instinctively reached out, wrapping her fragile fingers around his thumb. In that touch, every shred of darkness from the past forty-eight hours burned away.
